Maytag washer - loud rattle metal-sounding noise while spinning

I called our service tech to look at my Maytag washer in May because the wAsher was vibrating and moving around the floor while spinning and was it was noisey during the spin cycle. he lubricated snubbers and leveled legs. noise and movement seem to settle until recently the noise was back (machine not moving around, but still noisey) and yesterday he tells me the brake bearings that sit on the transmission need replacing and i should replace the snubber assembly while doing the brake repair/replacement. the total pice...$420.00!!!! In my reading on the website, fixya., the fellow says, and i quote
"You cannot lubricate the snubber to get rid of the noise. In fact, you may damage the washer if you do. A small amount of corn starch can be sprinkled under the bottom tub support where the snubber ring is located to get rid of some noise related problems (this will be the round metal plate where the tub support meets the bottom casing of the machine). A worn snubber will also cause some vibration or out of balance problems. The brake tends to glaze over after it has become worn and will squeak or cause sudden jerking of the washer when the spin cycle stops. If the corn starch tip does not get rid of the squeaks, I would recommend replacing the following parts: Brake Stator
Brake Rotor and Lining
Snubber:

SOwhat do you think? Do you agree he should not have lubricated the snubbers. At this price, i would be a fool to do the repair. I should just purchase a new machine. Sadly, for me, this machine is only eight years old and the reason I spent the $$$on Maytag was for longevity. What a huge disappointment unless, of c ourse, this fellow misdiagnosed the problem. Your thoughts are appreciated. Thank you.

SOURCE: I'm looking for a video to replace a snubber in my

I'm assuming that since you mentioned a "snubber" that the washer you are referring is a Maytag manufactured top loader (Admiral is manufactured by Maytag). If so, the following link can give you some guidance on how to repolace the snubber and/or brake assembly:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3574320-maytag_washer_squeaking_problem

I have included part numbers for tools you may need and some advice on what you can do to avoid having to purchase any higher priced special tools.

Replacement parts (if required) can be purchased at any of the following web sites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

Recommendations on parts that may require replacement:

Brake Rotor with Lining
Brake Stator Snubber

The part numbers will be based on your MODEL NUMBER.

Prices will vary between the sites I have listed, so shop and compare. The first three sites I have listed, have helpful exploded view diagrams to assist you with locating and properly identfying the parts you need. If you search by model number, these parts are listed under the "Transmission" parts list. This is not a difficult repair, and the parts (including most of the tools) are not expensive.

If you have any questions about this repair, please post back and let me know. I hope you find this information helpful.

one of the above. Tip the washer back and turn the main drive pulley while spraying a little WD-40 in there. That will quiet down the washer.

My maytag performa pav 2300 is making a loud noise while its spinning. Sounds like metal on metal. Its working fine. Its just that noise. We just got a new motor yesterday. What could be the problem ?...

Hello
On this model washer the noise is most likely caused by a worn washer tub seal assembly. remove agitator (nut on the top under cap), spin basket and tub assembly. remove seal and install new one.

Rattling noise during spin cycle

Most noises from a washing machine occur during the spin cycle. If you hear loud thumping during the spin, the load of clothes may have become unbalanced. Stop the washer and redistribute the clothes, then re-start it. Repeat these steps if necessary.

No, I'll tell you before forking out $ $ for some bad news. The noise is your bearing. You have to replace the outer tub .Its not going to be repaired any other way.The idiots who designed this washer made this a non servicable bearing. The labor is high not to mention the outer tub is also.REPLACE THE OUTER TUB.
