SOURCE: SMEG SA 398X
OK I have just moved into an apartment with this model (SA 398 X/1) and was searching for a user guide (no luck yet).
Anyhow my apartment was owned by a bachelor and it looks as though he hardly used the oven so everything's still intact.
I'm in Australia and these numbers are in Celsius so I hope they work for you.
From top Right (starting at the 2 o'clock position) the four numbers going clockwise downwards are:
50
90
120
160
Then from the left side (starting at 7 o'clock position) going clockwise upwards:
200
230
250 - with dots arching above the 250
Hope this helps -
Jane

i would know them if i were looking at it but hope this helps
line at top - top element only
line at bottom - bottom element only
line at top and bottom - conventional oven ie top and bottom elements on
wavy line - grill element
pic of fan - fan only with no heat
pic of fan with a line as well - fan oven
youi may not have all of these depending on oven.

I had the same problem when I moved into my current apartment (mine's the 20-1 model). I was at a loss as to what all those symbols meant, so emailed [email protected] and they sent me a pdf copy of the manual. It's not exactly the same model as you have, but I assume the symbols are the same. I'm happy to email you my manual if you'd like. Otherwise, the controls (for the 20-1 at least) are as follows:
Fan symbol - defrost (fan only - does not use thermostat)
Fan symbol within a circle - fan forced oven
3 little triangles - static grill (keep oven door open)
3 triangles above the fan symbol - fan grill (keep door closed)
I hope that all makes sense.

Yeah I was stumped with this for a short time as it isnt imediately obvious.
The bottom of the two brackets has a flip up catch, place these in the upright position and with some force hook the upper bracket into these catches (please ensure you keep your face and hands away from the direction of the spring)
Once you have the two brackets held open offer up the door at exactly 45 degrees (notice the notch on the underside of both lower brackets) locate this notch on the door hinge hole studs.
Once this is done and your certain it is in the correct postion lower the door from 45 degrees to 90 degrees, put some pressure on the door slightly past 90 degrees and carefully fold down the flip up catches that are holding the upper brackets.
