I found the plastic button plunger on the front becomes too short to actuate the tiny on/off switch inside. Remove the cover and insert a piece or two of thickish paper (like file-folder thickness) between the plastic plunger and the switch. Let it hang back over the circuit board so it will stay in place.

This could be anything but I would guess you probably have a short in the system. If you could give me more information I may be able to help you better.

POWER SUPPLY BLOWN FUSE CAUSED FOR A BLOWN OUTPUT TRANSISTOR , DO YOU HAVE THE NUMBER OF THOSE TRANSISTORS??
SOURCE: How do I reset the protection mode on my Optimus
You can not "reset" protection mode. This is an indication of a defect. Disconnect the speaker wires completely and if the protection mode remains, then the problem is internal to the unit and is likely to be shorted output transistors. Expect a parts cost in the $20-$50 range for this repair.

I have the same receiver, but have been unable to program it with my Universal Code. I do not have the original remote. Did you find a code that controlled it? I found one website that had the owners manual online, maybe that would help: http://support.radioshack.com/support_audio/doc58/58124.htm
