Different color leads in transformers

I am replacing a 120v/24v transformer in an air handler. The secondary voltage (24v) leads in the old transformer are red and white. In the new one they are pink and brown. Which corresponds to which? Is there a way to tell the polarity and is this essential when replacing it?

No, it doesn't matter. If you want to make sure hook up the leads to the 120 side and then turn on power and check the leads coming off the low voltage side to make sure you getting the 24v before hooking it into the board.

Thermostat will not come on, therefore unit will not come on


Your thermostat is probably wired directly into the furnace to supply the 24V to power the stat. You have to make sure you're getting 120V into the primary side of the transformer, and 24V out of the secondary side. If you've got voltage in and nothing out replace the transformer with one of the same voltage, and same or higher VA rating. If you don't have 120V in then start checking backwards starting with power in/out of the door switch, then back to the unit disconnect switch, and back to the breaker if necessary. If you've got 24V out of the secondary go check to see you've got 24V at the thermostat between the R and C terminals, if you do the thermostat is bad. As with any electrical wiring make sure you've got good connections on all wiring terminations. On a 120v primary / 24vac secondary transformer, how do you know which of the secondary wires are the common or the 24vac?


Take your multi-meter and test each lead to ground.
The hot wire will show voltage.
The neutral will not show voltage.
Set multi-meter to 24V
Put one prong on wire, put other prong inside ground port on wall plug

Hi,
Usually that is because of a blown fuse in the air handler or fuenace which ever you have or the transformer that supplies the 24v to the thermostat, also in the air handler or furnace, has gone bad...
Check to see if you have 24v at the transformer and then flow it from there...

You had a direct short. One of the wires shouldn't have been where it was. Tell me the color of the wires and the hook up.

rule of thumb from thermostat
red to R
White to W
Green to G
Yellow or Blue to Y
no comm hook up from t-stat
now the control for the ac is the Y terminal
and the only wire left to Common. Generally speaking. Let me know the wire colors? ken

I want to find the transformer for the 36 volt inside unit. Is it in the inside unit or outside unit .I have no power to the inside unit however the outside unit has power,and the inside unit appears to be...


It's a 24v transformer. Your indoor unit houses the transformer for the outdoor unit. The outdoor has a low voltage (24v) supply running to it to push in the contactor for the outdoor unit to run. If your air handler inside has no power then it will kill your LOW VOLTAGE power to the outdoor unit. You will still have the high voltage power to the outdoor unit. You may have a fuse on the switch for your air handler blown if there is one. On the disconnect switch mounted to your air handler, you will have a door to open and a fuse in there. If not, check your main breaker at the panel. If you don't know what a transformer looks like, you may want to have someone familiar with electrical of HVAC help you. To check the transformer for power, you first need power to your air handler, which you don't have. I would say that is not your problem. I would assume your air conditioner is not running outside, correct? Your problem is the power (HIGH VOLTAGE) to your air handler. Loose wires, blown fuse, tripped breaker etc...

What you need is a 24 volt transformer that has a rating of at least 40VA. 120 volts is the primary and 24 volts is the secondary voltage. You should try to figure out why the transformer burnt out first.

Dimmer Installation


Dimmers should always be connected to line voltage (usually 120 volts). That is, when a dimmer is used to control a low voltage transformer it is always connected between the source of the power and the primary side (the line voltage side; the 120V side) of the transformer; it is never connected to the secondary side (the low voltage side; the 12V or 24V) of the transformer.

It wont turn on


If nothing will come on check the breaker to the indoor section, check that the service switch by the in door section is on and the blower door cover is tightly closed. If all these junctions are transmitting power then it may be a burned out transformer. If you can check for 120v on the primary coil of the transformer and 24v on the secondary that would tell you where the problem is. If theres no voltage on either side then backtrack from the transformer on the 120v side till you find 120v. If theres 120v but no 24v your transformer secondary is burned out. If theres both then the problem is downstream from the transformer: circuit board 3amp fuse, loose wiring.
