It could be the thermostat. At the thermostat, try taking the wires off of the R and Y terminals and connect those wires together. If the heating elements do not run, change the thermostat. If the elements still run, try jumping across the R and Y terminals inside the unit. If the elements do not run, change the thermostat and the thermostat wires.

Why does the water suddenly runs COLD after many minutes of running hot?


Unless you are using a tankless hot water heater, there is a limited amount of hot water available in the tank. Electric and gas water tanks need time to recover after use, and if you are using heavily, it can exhaust the available supply. That said, there are a couple reasons why you may have less hot water than seems normal. In both electric and gas water heaters, silt can form in the bottom of the tank. This will build up over time and displace water. It also reduces the heating efficiency of gas units. There is a drain valve on the bottom of water heater tanks to allow for purging of this silt periodically, but few ever do it. You could also have, in the case of an electric hot water heater, a bad element or thermostat. Most electric heaters have an upper and lower element and thermostat. If one fails the other will still work, but the water takes longer to get hot and will deplete faster.

If you are changing a water heater thermostat on your hot water heater, or would just like to troubleshoot your hot water heater, you may want to know how it is to be wired.

Here is a diagram of the way a normal electric hot water heater with two elements that run non-simultaneous will be wired. This means that only one element at a time will be working and have power going to it. The top element will heat water until it is heated to your set point and then it will switch the power to the lower element to heat the bottom of the tank. This gives you some hot water quickly, and then heats the rest of the tank.

Brand new heater seems to run out of hot water when ran for awhile and seems to take long to recover. also is it supposed to be noisy when running it almosy sounds like water running but its not


You have some hot water so that says specific things:
-Upper element is working.
-Electricity to water heater and circuit breaker are good
-You don't report a leak so TP valve is good
-You are not experiencing overheating event
-ECO reset button is not tripped
-Insulation and covers are in place so thermostat not exposed to cooler temperatures that would cause thermostat to misread temperature and cause overheating.

That leaves 6 suspects listed in order of ease:
1) Leaking faucet or broken water line that is running hot water all the time and tank cannot keep up.

2) Thermostats set too low. Turn power OFF, open covers and check each thermostat setting.

3) Loose screw or loose wire at upper thermostat, lower thermostat, or lower element. Turn power OFF and tighten screws, and look for signs of high heat and burning, especially on lower element.

4) Upper or lower thermostat is bad. Replace both thermostats for $28 and see if that corrects problem.

5) Defective wire between upper and lower sections of tank: If this is the case, and water heater has 2" foam insulation, then tank usually replaced since insulation is too dense to drop another wire. Call for manufacturer for warranty information. Do a full troubleshoot using multimeter.

You have a 240V electric water heater because you have an upper and lower element

The upper thermostat works in the manner you have discovered
.
In residential electric water heaters, the upper element is ON or the lower element is ON, or both elements are OFF.
This is called non-simultaneous operation.
Non-simultaneous operation means the elements are never turned ON at the same time.

Because water heater thermostats only turn off one leg of the 240V circuit, the upper and lower elements will always have power on the two screws, but not across the two screws.
This power is 120V and the circuit is not complete so the element will not heat.
So if you test any element, it will always show at least 120V
Only when the thermostat clicks ON is the 240V circuit completed, and the element turns ON.

Identify the problem:
1) The shortage of hot water is caused by a bad upper or lower thermostat or a bad lower element.
We know the upper element is working because you have some hot water. If the upper element was burned out, you would have no hot water because the upper thermostat would never click over and send power to lower part of water heater.

2) It sounds like your upper thermostat is clicking on and off, so I would test the lower element.

Hot water runs out after one shower


You say the hot water runs out after one shower.
You posted under electric heater.

In case you have a gas heater:
With gas heater
, the flame quality could be bad because of restricted air flow or dirty burner, the control valve and thermostat could be bad, the air intake could be clogged, or the water heater is full of sediment and the flame is burning all the time and unable to heat much water.

With electric heater, the lower element is probably burned out and bottom filled with sediment, but thermostats could be bad, or you could have shorted wire.

Narrow down the suspects
If water heater makes some hot water then upper element is working.

Three remaining suspects are upper thermostat, lower thermostat, lower element, and possibly a loose wire

Check screw terminals for signs of burning and loose wires. Especially check lower element.

Let's test lower element.
Turn off power.
Remove both wires from lower element.
Test across both screws with a continuity tester.
Continuity tester is available at hardware store, or you can make one with battery, wire and a flashlight bulb.

The continuity tester has a battery and when light comes on, it says the circuit is complete.
Test1) Test across both screws on lower element with continuity tester.
If light comes on then element is good, but element has to pass one more test.
Test2) Test each screw on element to any bare metal part of water heater.
If light does NOT come on with second test, then element is good.
Light ON first test. Light OFF second test. Then element is probably good. But test is not fail-proof without using a meter.

I'm betting the lower element is burned out and you need to replace lower element. And you may need to vacuum out the sediment.

Now if lower element is good, then the easiest thing is to do is replace both thermostats. Buy generic thermostats at hardware store for $25. After replacing both thermostats, the water heater will probably work. If there is still a problem, then the lower element was not as good as test showed, and it should be replaced also.

Lower element will always test 120V to ground since thermostats turn off one hot wire.

The hot water is no longer very hot, just nice and warm. What caused this? I have an electric water heater.

Little amount of hot water


Quite likely a bad element. There are two in electric HW heaters. Often the bottom one will fail so you only end up with the upper half heated up.

You can check it with a digital volt meter if you have one.

with the power off at the breaker box, you can remove the wires from the element and (using the ohm (resistance) setting) check across the terminals. it should read around (4500W/240V = 18 ohms).

How old a HW heater? might be time to replace it...

Whirlpool temp control on electric water tank


Most electric water heaters have 2 heaters - an upper and a lower, each with it's own thermostat. These are readily accessible by removing the screw covers on the side of the tank. Careful - the thermostats have 240VAC on the terminal screws (unless you have a small 120VAC heater) if the circuit breaker or fuses feeding the heater are still on - turn them off before proceeding. After removing the two screw covers and pulling back the insulation you will see temperature (screw) adjustments for the upper and lower thermostats, with a temperature indicating pointer attached to each screw. Set both thermostats to 125 degrees or so. Push the insulation back in place, replace the covers and turn the circuit breaker back on that feeds the water heater. You should have warm water within 15 minutes and hot water within a hour or so.

If the water still does not heat, then you have to troubleshoot to find the problem. With a voltmeter determine if 240VAC is actually getting to the water heater. Remember, the upper element has priority over the lower element, and if the water is cold, the upper element will try to turn on and this locks out the lower element (only one element is allowed to heat at any given time). The lower element comes on ONLY after the upper thermostat is satisfied. Therefore if the upper heating element is burned out you will never get any hot water. If you suspect this, TURN OFF THE POWER TO THE HEATER and take a resistance check of the upper element.
