Acer laptop problem: Hard disk/motherboard problem

Hi

I'm having a problem with my laptop the past few months. It is a Acer TravelMate 4021 laptop. Sometimes the computer suddenly can't read/write from/to the hard disk. And then when I switch the computer off (hard off) and switch it on again, the hard disk isn't detected at all. Usually when I wait a few hours and turn it on and off a few times, it detects the hard disk again and loads. Sometimes when it start the OS, the hard disk will do the same. I've tried about everything (a new hard disk and new RAM), but it didn't work. I've put the hard disk in another computer and it worked. It is strange that it works sometimes and sometimes not and it stops working at random times. I think it might be the motherboard / IO controllers that is causing all the trouble. Are there anything I can do about it?

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the reply. No, I didn't check my processor heat. However, sometimes after a week of no usage, when I switch the laptop on (while it is still cold), it doesn't detect the hard disk and say there is no bootable medium.
I've also put the laptop's hard disk in an external case, and booted from it. I got the same error after a few hour's usage. When I plug the external case in another computer and boot from that, there is no problem.

Thanks for the reply. No, I haven't tried to look at the processor heat. However, sometimes when I switch the laptop on after a day/week of no usage, it doesn't detect the hard disk (while it is still cold) and say that no bootable medium were found.
I've also tried to put the laptop's hard disk in an external case. When I boot from the laptop's hard disk via the external case on the laptop, I get the same problem after a few hour's usage. When I boot from the external on another computer, then it works.
I've also tried to flush the BIOS. That didn't work.
When I boot from an OS that puts the whole OS in the RAM and work completely just from the RAM after copying everything from the bootcd (like PuppyLinux), then it doesn't give any problems (that is if I don't use the hard disks from it).

No, it didn't help. The computer doesn't have a IDE cable (it is like directly on the motherboard). I also installed the latest updates, but it didn't help. :-(

    Thanks for the help

Hi, Yeah this can be the problem with motherboard or IO controller. Did you tried to check your processor heat from BIOS after the usage about half an hour? Try to do this may be some issue with heat sink.

Try 2 things....1) replace the IDE controller cord or the SATA cord whichever applies. If this doesn't fix the prob try downloading latest mobo updates as well as any Acer updates for your specific model. Let me know if any of this works.

Thx

Audio video doesnt play smooth, it's jittery. cpu usage of player goes 40-60%. windows xp prof service pack 3. all acer travelmate audio video drivers. acer travelmate 4000 notebook

Does this happen only when viewing online audio/video, as opposed to inserting a music-CD into your CD-drive, and using Windows Media Player to play the music?

If so, then how fast is your Internet connection?
It probably is too slow to download and play at the same time.
So, when you click on a YouTube video, click "pause",
and let the download proceed for a minute or two,
and then click "play", to play what has been downloaded.

Hdd password ,how 2 retervie

There are no backdoor passwords available. The password cannot be removed from the hard disk unless you know the original password to get into the hard disk and you can then remove the password.
Hard drive password is set to protect data stored on the hard drive from unauthorized access. Removing the hard drive and inserting it into another computer still will not allow access without the password.
If you cannot remember the password, your only options is to replace the hard drive with a new one and install Windows, the device drivers and your programs etc. to get a fully functioning computer again.

Bios password problem

try this,

members have reported that they were able to remove their Acer BIOS passwords by simply opening their notebooks and removing the CMOS batteries for 30 minutes.
Once your BIOS password is removed, you will need to press the <F2> key during POST (Power On Self Test) to enter the Acer BIOS setup.

if that don't work, acer support charges 100.00 to reset the password, What a rip-off.
