Question about SmartDisk FireLite 20 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Firelite usbflb40-c USB device exceeded power limits of hub port

This is a 40 Gb USB FireLite Disk Drive

The disk activity light is flashing but I cannot see the drive in 'My Computer' or other apps. When I disconnect/reconnect I get the following message:

''Power Surge On Hub Port.
A USB device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port. For assistance in solving this problem, click here.''

Clicking the message takes me to a window which tells me that:

''A USB device has malfunctioned and exceeded the power limits of its hub port. You should disconnect the device.''

The is also an option to reset the port.

I have followed these instructions and I have tried switching ports, but the problem persists.

Is there anything that I can do to salvage the firelite drive, or the data on board?

Thanks.

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most portable / external hard drives (though not always)
A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability
2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)
3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.
4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply
Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.
5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again.
If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues carry on reading.
Go to your control panel and then administrative tools, select Computer Management.
Now select Disk Management and expand the window.
Your drive should be listed here, if not then you need to check your computer hardware has not got any issues before proceeding.
If your drive is listed and says healthy then right click on it an select Properties, click Tools and then Error Checking, Check now, tick the two boxes and then Start.
This will attempt to fix most minor / common errors on the drive. It may also ask you to restart which is fine. Allow it to finish its work or you could corrupt the drive. If all went well you should be able to use it normally again.
If you drive was listed but did NOT say healthy then right click and select Format. Choose NTFS as the file system and do not tick any boxes you do NOT want quick format. Again start and let it do its thing. When it is done restart your computer and you should be good to go.
If you still have problems with the drive you might want to look at other areas.

Try rebooting your computer with the Smart Disk plugged in. You can also try moving all the contents of the Smart disk to your computer and access from there.

1. It may be due to the electronics in the USB case.
You can purchase a new case and install the hard drive and connect to the USB port to your laptop/PC.
If the drive is not seen after this then the drive itself may be damaged.
If you disconnected the USB drive without "safely removing it in Windows it may have damaged the hard drive controller.

No computers will recognize my externaml Hard drive. Its model number is usb160. whenever i plug it in to anything, all it shows is a flashing blue light. Can you please help?

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

It seems that the disk-drive is "dying".
If it works, at least a bit, copy all the files from it onto your C: drive, or burn the files to DVD-writable disk(s).
Then, exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

1. the only way to know what breally has gone wrong is to open the enclosure & check. if the Ports has broken off fromm the PCB borad inside then ( if you are technically savvy) you can resolder it back. ( the disk has to be removed first) if not you have two option.

1. take a device to a repair shop.
2. buy a new enclosure & swap the disk

Most likely the vacuum and not the ants. The vacuum could have given it a dangerous charge or vibration. You may need to extract the drive from the enclosure. It possible ( hopefully) that the enclosures bridge board failed instead of the drive. When you extract the drive, you will see....its construction is made well, and can stand up to crittters..

keep me posted.
