I decided to get of vista, formated the HDD on my dell Vostro 1400 and now when installing a fresh copy of windows XP Pro, it would not read the HDD and it cancels set-up.
I tried with another machine's HDD and the problem persists.
Go to the BIOS setup, & change the disk controller setting from AHCI to IDE. might worth the try. Some Laptops don't have option of SCSI or IDE. But there are SATA Enable/Disable option. Try disabling SATA.
You will be able to load XP but I suggest you to install Dell Vostro and SATA drivers.That you'll probably find it here:

If your HDD will not recognized during installation you need to check if your HDD is detected. Try to look at your BIOS if it is detected. IF the HDD will not detected you need to replace the cable, try to use the other slot of your SATA or IDE ports.
