You cannot properly test electrolytic capacitors with a voltmeter. You must have 2 test devices:
1: A Capacitance measuring meter
2: An ESR meter (Electrical Series Resistance)

You would see the capcitors that need to be replaced as they would be buldging or leaking at that point. Yoiu can also check them with a voltage metter and see if ther hold there capcity.

thanks

Screen Display stays on after several times of turning off and on

Hello,

The most common cause of this is a failure of the filter capacitors on the power supply board. If you can do a little soldering then the repair is easy to do. You will need to replace the bad capacitors and then the unit should be as good as new again. Here is a link to additional information on which capacitors you will need to replace.

Have vizio 37 in lcd , heard poping noise. now screen is black but sound works

Plasma and LCD TV sets are prone to having capacitors in the power supply section fail. This is the most likely cause for the probem you describe. When capacitors fail your will commonly see one or more of the following symptoms.
  • No video, Power light is on or blinking.
  • TV is making a clicking noise.
  • TV takes a while to come on
  • Screen is very dim or flickers.

Again, You can get a power supply repair kit with the parts, detailed instructions, and support from sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com . Or just click here to see more details on their kit.

Here are pictures of capacitors...Notice that the ones below look bloated. They have failed and will need to be repalced.

3 of the (FZ7A1000 mfd 16V) capacitors near the power cable connection in my 9600 got burnt. I used to run my PC continious for more than 5 days. What may be the causes. Now the graphics card works for a...

Capacitors on motherboards and other electronic circuits sometimes leak and buldge and fail to perform their function. Faulty capacitors fail to hold the charge properply, heatup and do not supply proper power to other components on board/ circuit. I have come accross such cases with motherboards and after replacing the capacitors the they worked fine.
So, I recommend that you inspect the board properly, point out the faulty capacitors, find the exact replacement (FZ7A1000 mfd 16V), make sure that all the capacitors are the same and replace them one by one. Take proper caution while replacing the capacitors.
I hope that it would helps resolving the issue.

Good Luck!

When I hit the power button on my 32" Vizio Plasma

Hello,

You have a TV with a failing power supply board. There are parts in the power supply called capacitors that start failing and this causes the power supply to not be able to properly filter the voltages. When you keep turning it on and off the capacitors will finally hold a charge correctly so the voltages will stabilize and the TV turns on ok until the next time you turn it off. As time goes by the capacitors will degrade more until the TV will not work any more. If you can solder then you should be able to repair the TV yourself. We have a page on our web site http://www.ccl-la.com/blog/index.php/capacitors/
That explains what capacitors are and how to determine the bad ones that have failed. If you replace the failed capacitors in the power supply then you should have a working TV again.

Sceptre LCD - no display

It may be the capacitors, since capacitors run about $1.50 or so depending on size you may spend a little over $6 total if you already have soldering equipment or a friend with skills.

AKAI 27" LCD Power Supply - Replacing capacitors and diodes

Kris,
You can always replace a lower voltage cap with a higher voltage just don't change the rating... In fact you could replace the 16v cap with a 400v cap if it would physically fit.
As far as replacing a zener under the heat sink, yes you'll probably have to remove the heat sink itself if it's blocking. And as for any words of wisdom - if your repair is unsuccessful try replacing the module. Shop Jimmy usually has them used if you don't want to spend full bore and order a new one.
Good Luck!

DELL GX60 WITH WINDOWS XP. MACHINE RE-STARTS AT ANY MOMENT

If you look at the top of the round shaped electrolytic capacitors, the good ones are flat, the bad ones are domed (internal pressure deforms the top of the capacitor and can explode).
Make sure you replace with the same capacitance and working voltage or slightly higher voltage.
These capacitors are polarized, make sure you don't solder them the wrong way.
Also the RAM may not make proper electrical connection, it can cause re-booting problems, remove the RAM and insert them a couple of times.
Over heating problems can also shut a computer down, make sure the fans are working properly, vacuum/remove dust from the fans (ie CPU fan & heatsink also from power supply and vents)

If you are certain that the capacitor is OK, there could be a different problem on the main power board or even on the sub-power board. The sub-power board should have output voltages even if the main power board is defective.

Horiz. lines across top of screen.

I agree with solution #2

I recently had my phillips 27" model 27PT6341/07 repaired after warranty expired due to white lines appearing at the top of the screen. The shop advised that it was a capacitor giving me the problem. So, after getting it back, I examined the repair job and the shop had replaced a capacitor at the back of the main board, next to the rear rca inputs. It is labeled 10uf 100v. I was told that it would fail again soon because it is a manufactures defect. For me it is at location 2465. Here are a couple of photos of the part.

Horizontal white lines at top of screen.

This problem is generally due to aged Electrolytic capacitors in the Vertical section. Again, to save time, I invariably replace all the 8-10 El caps in this stage at one go. solves the problem, saves time, and also protects the customer from bringing in the machine again in another 2-3 months, for another bad capacitor problem.
