no,this is ok,because moitors are voltage based lower in voltage than other appliances w/o motors,a 230 volt motor will operate fine at +/- 10% voltage as in 230 + 23 volts higher = 253volts and visa-versa 230volts - 23 volts + 207 volts, if your losing units,have your power supplier check the incoming neutral connection to the home,then have them install a temporary power quality monitor on the line to check for "power-Spikes/Surges" especially if your near any type of commercial setting with 3 phase power as these large facilities create lots of power spikes during operation of their equipment

Fan motor is not turning. Seems to have voltage (I havent checked at the wires yet) due to humming noice at the unit. the model of the ac is lennox 13ACD-048-230-02 the motor is a Emerson modle...


If this is the out door unit, check where the humming is coming from. It is either the motor or the contactor.
If the humming is coming from the motor, the motor itself probably has the bearings worn in it, or the capacitor (looks like a battery) is shorted or open. If the capacitor is shorted it will look "pregnant" or bloated.
If the humming is coming from the contactor (the automatic switch where the power comes in to the unit) you may have a loss of power. Either the fuses are blown or breakers are tripped. There are two fuses. You can't tell by looking at them if they are blown, so change them both. There are also two breakers. Pull them all the way down, then back up.
If the bearings[bushings] are worn in the motor, the motor will have to be replaced.
You also did not say whether or not the compressor was running or not. Knowing this would tell me a lot. Hope this helps you

PHO24-IB GODDMAN CONTACTOR CLOSES, RUN CAPACITOR HAS CORRECT MFD, OHMED/MEGAOHMED COMPRESSOR...BUT IT STILL DOESN'T START.


I assume that is a 240 volt unit. If you have a volt meter, check for power across the contactor . If it is a 240 volt unit you should get 240volts on both sides of the contactor. If you DO have voltage across the contactor (after it closes) you need to try and get to the compressor where the wires connect to it. There should also be 240 volts at the compressor terminals marked "C" and "R". If you have power at the compressor between C and R and the compressor is still not even trying to start, the compressor windings are open. Here is really what any tech will need to know to really help you:
(1) Is the fan motor running?
(2) what voltage is the unit?
(3) is the compressor humming or trying to start?
(4) do you have the proper voltage at the unit?

If you can answer these questions and you want to email me, do so and I will step you thru it. Be very careful , as you are dealing with high voltage.

If the humming is your compressor running (feel the large copper line going into the unit, it should feel cold aftter a few minutes of run time) then the fan motor or the capacitor or both need to be replaced, check for voltage to the fan motor when the unit is "humming" if it has voltage and will not start replace the fan motor and the capacitor. hope this helps.

I am changing from 460 V to 230 V on a Ingersol Rand Compressor motor # 32036006 and I cant get it to start it turns real slow is this supposed to have some sort of a motor starter capicitor set up ?


Recheck the way you have the motor leads hooked up, make sure they are correct. You did re connect the motor leads didnt you? You are not trying to run it on 230v single phase are you? Assuming it is a dual voltage motor, the leads will have to be re connected from hi voltage to lo voltage. Also when you cut the operating voltage in half the operating current(amps ) will double, all this info should be on the motor name plate. This motor does not use a capicitor to start it

Compressor won't switch on, have tried reset switch and circuit breaker, but though the wall unit comes on the compressor wont..anything I can do? This has three phase power Mitsubishi..Mr Slim


If you have any experience in working with electrical systems, you can, but if not you should call a service technician.
First being very careful, check to make sure contactor is engaging.
Then check to see if you have the same voltage across all three wires on the compressor side of the contactor, assuming this is 230 volts, check T1 to T2 should have 230 volts, then check T2 to T3 should have 230 volts then check T1 to T3 should have 230 volts. If you have 230 volts to all 3 wires then the compressor is bad probably an open winding and needs replaced. Before replacing the compressor you need to check the resistance (with an ohmmeter) between all 3 terminals at the compressor. In order to do this you need to disconnect all power to the unit and ohm the compressor terminals from T1 to T2, T2 to T3 and T1 to T3 they should all have the same resistance if they do then the windings are good and the compressor is locked up, if one of the the windings is different then the windings are bad, either way the compressor needs replaced.

Craftsman air compressor is hums but the compressor will not fire up

No Cooling.
Turn the selector switch to “Cool” and the
thermostat to a low temperature (below room temperature).
The fan runs OK, but the unit does not cool. When the unit
housing is removed, we observe that the compressor does not
run; however, it periodically hums for 15 to 30 seconds.

Possible Causes- Check all of this before buying a new unit, that may not be the solution.

“The voltage could be low – ”
a) Check the voltage between #1 on the
overload switch and the “R” terminal of the
compressor while it is not humming. This
voltage must be 115 volts domestic USA
models or 240 volts export/overseas models.
No less than minus 10% is allowable.
b) Check the voltage from “C” or “R” of the
compressor while it is humming (trying to
start). The latter reading will probably be
lower, but it still must be 103.5 volts
minimum domestic USA or 216 volts
minimum export/overseas models.
If the first reading is above 103.5V domestic USA and
the second is under 103.5V domestic USA, there is
too much voltage drop in the lines - a situation which
must be corrected for the air conditioner to perform
safely and satisfactorily.
2. “A capacitor could be shorted, weak or open.”
Turn the power off.
Caution – There is always a chance that a capacitor is
holding a residual charge, so before touching a
terminal, discharge the capacitor as explained earlier
in this booklet.
Remove capacitors, visually examine them and test
them per instructions given in earlier section on
capacitor testing (See page 9).
If the capacitors test OK, replace them and carefully
reconnect the wires. Be sure the wires are connected
to the right terminals.
3. “Start relay contacts could be open – ” if so equipped.
Turn off all power, then check for continuity with
ohm meter between terminals 1 & 2.
4. “Compressor start winding could be open or
grounded.”
Check compressor windings per instructions. See the
section on the compressors (See page 8).
5. “Compressor could be mechanically stuck.”
This very rarely occurs and when it does, it is usually
after a lengthy shutdown. This should be considered
only after all the above possible causes have been
positively eliminated. To free a stuck compressor, use
your hermetic analyzer according to the
manufacturers instructions.

I have a Carrier 38tra048340 ac 4 ton unit outside, heater in attic. Thermostat is Totaline P374-1100. Power went out than back on after a few hours due to vehicle crashing into power pole. AC was running...


Blank screen sounds like a fried thermosat. Abrupt outages can affect certain types of thermostats. Make a jumper wire and jump across R and G. See if you get any action from anywhere. If a fan or compressor kicks in you know you have a burned out thermosat...
