You only need to replace the cord if it has been damaged. It will cost less if you just take the machine , cord and control to a local technician and have him just replace the foot control. Let him test it first. A generic foot control should cost less than $30.

SOURCE: Kenmore sewing machine 385.1960180, problem with needle centering

That sounds like it's definitely an internal adjustment. The machine will need to be opened up and the left/right adjustment taken care of. Is this machine one that you can open the top easily, or is it the type that has the front and rear shell?

Is this a Janome MemoryCraft 9000? (I ask because the models seem to get mixed up in the threads)

If so, you can more than likely find accessories for the MC9000 either on eBay, your local Janome dealer (you can find the closest one to you @ Janome's website using the "Dealer Locator" feature) or even ... SEARS!

Sears contracted Janome to make several of their sewing machines (I think Janome might still be the actual manufacturer, but aren't 100% sure) and so the parts are compatible. You can even use a Kenmore Memory Card with a Janome MC9000.

As for oiling, if it's the MC9000 (much like practically all newer models) they don't need oiling. Though sometimes, you can dab a teeny-tiny amount of oil on the bobbin case if it needs it.

Why is needle hitting zipper foot on left side only?

When the needle is set on the center position, is it centered or is it slightly off center? If so, then the mechanism needs to be adjusted so that the needle is perfectly centered. When it is off-center, you will get the problem you are experiencing with hitting one side of the zipper foot. May want to take it in for service.
