To get frost off the inside or out of the coil?
I would see if you have different controls for the freezer side and fridge side. If so turn the freezer off. If you can see the frozen coil use a hair dryer on it to speed the process. Usually the fridge side just steals cold air from the freezer side however.
If you're talking about frost on the inside, take all the food out and put in ice chest. Leave freezer door open, point a fan into it, use a hair dryer to speed up the process.
Some models have a drain hole in the bottom that goes to a short hose. You can add hose to that to run outside. If not you'll need some beach towels.

SOURCE: GE side by side refrigerator defrost problem

CHECK THE DEFROST HEATER FOR CONTINUITY. IF IT IS O.K. CHECK THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL FOR A FAULTY SOLDER CONNECTION ON THE DEFROST RELAY. THE ELECTRONIC BOARD SHOULD BE LOCATED ON THE BACK WALL OF THE REFIGERATOR BEHIND AN ACCESS PANEL.

SOURCE: refrigerator not cooling

see if the compressor motor is running

The compressor is a football-sized case with no apparent moving parts. It's on the outside of the refrigerator at the back near the bottom. If it is humming or making a continuous noise and your refrigerator is still not cooling, there may be a more serious problem with one or more of several different components, we recommend contacting a qualified appliance repair technician for further help.

If the compressor is not running but you do have power to the refrigerator, there may be a problem with one or more of these:

  • The compressor

  • The Thermostat

  • The overload, relay, or capacitor

  • The defrost timer

  • The condenser fan motor

The fan should be a standard 12v DC computer style fan , test that you are getting voltage to the fan connector . You should also be able to get the fan to run by connecting it to a suitable supply . Once you have eliminated the possibility of fan failure then it gets more involved.

SOURCE: G.E. Side by side model quit dispensing water

It is possible the water line inside the freezer door froze . Remove the bottom kick plate and follow the white tubing about 6" to a coupling . Push in on the white ring and at the same time , pullout on the tubing . Push the water dispensor , and if water comes out of the hose going under the fridge , this means the line is frozen in the door . If no water comes out , it means the water tank at the bottom of the fridge section (behind crispers ) is probably frozen . A hair dryer should work on the tank , but , a different procedure will be needed to thaw the door . Come back if door is frozen for the procedure .

Testimonial: "The diagnostic aid was helpful. Still trying to figure out how to unfreeze the water line in the door of the side by side GE refrigerator, however. "

My GE profile side by side refrigerator's temperature is not staying where I put it. It keeps popping to 31 degrees when I set it for 37 degrees. My food is freezing !!

It may need to defrost. Shut it off for 4-5 hours to let any accumulated ice to defrost and see what happens.

There also is a control that directs more cooling to the refridgerator or the freezer compartment. It may need to be readjusted. It will take 24 hours to stabilize.

I have a GE side by side refrigerator GSS22JEMB BB. The defroster heater was replaced. How do I know if the defroster is working properly. Can I manually manually make the fridge go into defrost mode? Also...

To go into defrost manually : Remove the 10"X13" panel from the back of the fridge . You will see a plug with 3 larger wires going to it . Unplug this plug ( UNPLUG THE REFRIGERATOR FIRST ) . The blue receptical will look like this wire#1,wire#2, space , wire#3 . Use an insulated jumper inserted into the receptical to wire #2 and #3 . Plug refrigerator back in . You will be able to see the glow from the defrost heater if the freezer is cold enough and the bimetal is good .

Some models , when the freezer door opens , the fan will keep running and others , the fan will stop , until the door is closed .

There will be a slight stream of cold air at the top of refrigerator section due to the fact , that if it was a larger stream , food would freeze on the top shelf of the refrigerator section .

I have a Kenmore Cold Spot fridge, freezer on top. Fridge is warm, and freezer keeps freezing up on sides and bottom. I cleaned it all out, defrosted it, and it still freezes up and fridge still won't get...

Is this a self defrost model? Frost inside the freezer could be an air leak around the door gasket. Remove the back panel in the freezer and completely defrost the coils. Is the fan running in the freezer. That will make the frig not be cool. With the door closed peek in the gasket to make sure the light is shutting off, this will warm a frig also.

Froze but won't could

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer/control board
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
