SOURCE: stripped bar stud

Many Sthil chainsaws have replaceable bar studs. The stud threads into the case. Go here: http://www.baileysonline.com/itemdetail.asp?item=QA+0000+953+6605&catID=407
look for part by model number, usually no more than a few dollars. Enjoy

SOURCE: stihl saw bar oil pump not working

The first step should not be to replace the pump, there are less drastic things you can look at first. Begin by draining the oil out of the tank and then fishing out the feed line, see that little filter on the end? Make sure it is clean. That alone will fix most of them. Also, on many models of Stihl saws the oil flow rate is adjustable. Flip the saw on its back and look for a little half-circle arrow with a representation of a drop of oil at one end. Using a small straight blade screwdriver go in the hole and turn the adjuster fully clockwise. The last thing only applies if you have had the chain off and removed the clutch drum. If you've lost your retaining clip and had the drum slide out it will disengage the oil pump too. There is a little slot on the edge of the drum that engages the drive wire for the oil pump, so remove your drum and reinstall it making sure you get them lined up.

If those things fail go ahead and replace the pump. They can be had used in good shape for about $25~$45 and you shouldn't have any problem replacing it yourself, I believe dealers get over two hundred to do the replacement. There are also internal parts of the pump that can be replaced but someone else will ahve to tell you about them.

Stihl ms291 needs oil adjustment. Where is the screw located to adjust the bar oiler.

MS291 Does NOT have an oil adjustment screw. It is an auto oiler. Make sure the ports are clean and oil is coming out running the saw with chain off. Then add a little canola oil to your chainsaw bar oil and thin it down. You will get a better flow. Stihl has a poor design on this model.

Stihl 028 av super not oiling

Part of the routine service while sharpening the chain and adjusting the chain tension is to remove the guide bar to clean the slot and to clean the side of the saw case of any and all impacted crud. This impacted crud many times inhibits the oil flow to the bar causing it to appear as though the oiler is not oiling. Make sure you clean the discharge port of the oil pump...it will be the opening that aligns with a slot in the bar to transfer the oil to the chain.

After cleaning and reassembling, start the saw and rev it up for 2 to 3 seconds and observe the bar tip as it is aimed against a clean piece of cardboard. If the oiler is working, within this time frame, a thin film of oil will appear as it is slung off the bar tip.

How to stop sawdust from coming into the carburetor section and how to adjust the chain oiler. chain seems dry.

Check to ensure the oil opening on the side of the saw housing is not plugged as well as the matching oil groove in the guide bar first. Turn the saw upside down and see if there is a + and a - sign near the sprocket on the bottom. If so, turning towards the + increases flow. Most new small saws oilers are non-adjustable.

I have a Stihl MS 290, runs great, but the chain keeps tightening it's self on it's own

That's an unusual problem, usually the opposite happens. After making sure the chain brake is off, loosen the two nuts that hold the bar. Be sure to hold the bar up when adjusting the tensioner screw and adjust until the chain is just snug, but not too tight. While still holding the bar up, tighten the two nuts firmly. Check to see that the chain can move freely by hand. Then start the saw and run the chain at speed with something in front of the nose to check for adequate lubrication. You should note a slight fine spray of oil on the object in front of the nose of the bar. Inadequate lubrication, a chain that is binding on the bar, or an overly tight chain can cause the bar to heat up and expand, further tightening the chain. A properly adjusted Stihl saw will use almost all of the chain oil in the reservoir for every tank of gas. Too much oil is better than too little. The oil feed may have to be adjusted for operating in temperature extremes. If operating in very hot conditions, be sure that the saw has not run out of chain oil. The oil feeds faster when hot.

Chain is not getting oil

Start with the simple:
  • Make sure you have enough oil in the tank.
  • Then take off the bar and clean any saw dust out of the bar groove, especially by the oil holes. This can be accomplished with a raker adjustment tool or a putty knife. Next clean the oil holes in the bar and oil slot on the saw head.
  • If this doesn't solve your problem, your oil pump may need adjustment, or replacement.
  • Your owners manual will have the directions on how to adjust the oiler.
