Question about SimpleTech Pininfarina 80GB External USB 2.0 SP-UE25/80 (SPUE2580) Hard Drive

Computer doesn't recognize drive anymore

About a week ago my laptop with my Pininfarina 80GB External HD locked up for no particular reason. Since then the External Drive F: will work, but both my laptop and desktops have issues recognizing it as a drive.

When connecting, it shows under the "Safely remove hardware" icon.
It shows in device manager as a working disk drive.
It does NOT show in My Computer.

I usually have to uninstall it from device manager and reboot to reinstall it, (The installation takes MUCH longer than when I first began to use it)
THEN it will show in My Computer, but will not be accessible.
THEN I have to Run chkdrive from the Command prompt and do a lengthy repair. All the data remains intact after I repair.

This happens every time I try to switch it between the laptop and desktop, which is pretty often. Before switching, I DO safely remove it.

This seems to be an issue in particular with the HD, as if it does not actually disconnect from the computers when it's supposed to. Any ideas?

Re: Computer doesn't recognize drive anymore

I I had a similar problem with a SimpleTech 250g Pininfarina USB drive.
I went through the drivers, the power supply, the USB cables, and the various
computers, USB cards and Operating systems.
Finally I opened the case and found the disk drive was mounted too far
forward, causing the IDE connector to barely touch. I loosened the mount screws,
slid the drive back towards the connector, tightened everything down and it works.

Re: Computer doesn't recognize drive anymore

Sounds like you are swapping this external drive between two PC's. Why don't you do this! Get it connected to one of your PC's preferrably your desktop. Once you get it connected and it is able to be read and you can read files or acces it! Share it out, under Windows XP you can share out drives, files, printers etc.

Once you do this both PC's can share this device without you having to swap between PC's manually!
I can walk you through this if you need further help, but if this persists, it sounds like your files are corrupt on this drive you may need to reformat the drive.

Your hard drive is probably dead. However there are stillhopes for hard drive datarecovery.
Put the hard drive in a plastic bag to be compatible for the freezer. Freezingsometimes works to revive a dying hard drive, at least for a shorttime(Probable just about 20 minutes), but be sure that the bag is sealedtightly so that condensation and ice crystals don't form. Put it in yourfreezer for 24 hours that will do the trick. While it's still cold, plug itinto your computer. And you may be able to view it in 'my computer'. And youmay act quickly, because you may only have 20 minutes to recover your data offit and after that the hard drive is completely dead.
If it fails, you will have to go to a recovery office where supply datarecovery service but let's hope not because it will cost you a lot of money andwhether they can recover data is not guaranteed.
Here is a tutorial to guide you how torecover hard drive data.

test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty:
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd have secure connections and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty ?

even something as small as an electrical extension or a faulty fan lead can cause this problem follow the troubleshooting procedure a computer needs all of the data and electrical current to travel through every working device and to have an end to be able work properly

a motherboard and a hard drive any leads between them will fail before your motherboard or your hard drive check all electrical extensions make sure they are securely seated even the cd/dvd drives need to have current go through make sure these :devices are working:

just in case
:click start control panel administrive tools ,computer management ,device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or
if you can see your usb but its not working
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver
if your computer came with a motherboard disk the drivers could be on it
sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable,
just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,
check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems also make sure the computers Ram and Cmos battery are securely seated
hope this helps
