HP Media center PC m8120n. When I go to my computer the bar below the D: is red and only has 722mb left. My computer is sluggish and I thought maybe this was the problem.

  • apeyb Jul 31, 2009

I cannot open the folder for D:. It says it is restricted. I have used the disk cleanup feature for that drive and all it will remove is the Recycle Bin (which is already empty.). Why would this drive be so full yet I cannot open any files? I have made a copy of the drive folder and it is on my external back up disk. Should I just format the D: drive? As far as the C: and E: drives they have plenty of space over 250gb remain.

  • apeyb Aug 03, 2009

On my D: drive there is 733MB free of 8.92GB. The warning is; Recovery Partition

This area of your hard drive contains files used for your PC recovery.

Do not delete or alter these files.

Any changes to this partition could prevent any recovery later.

What is the make and model your computer? You may free up the space on the hard disk by deleting the unwanted files. Are you getting any messages regarding the disk space on your computer?

What is the status of your C Drive (where the windows is installed)? How much free space is available in it? Usually the if the drive which does not have windows installed is running low on disk space won't cause much problems like the slow PC etc. However its is recommended that you delete the unwanted files from the D drive and make the free space upto 2 Gigs or more. For that open up my computer, go to D drive and delete the files/folders that you do not want. After that click on Start button >> select RUN, and type "%temp%" without the quotes and press Enter. Temp folder from C drive shall open up, delete all the files from that as they are the temporary files and can be removed safely. You might not be able to delete all the files from there, so delete as many as you can. Now open Internet Explorer and click on Tools at the top and select Internet Options. Click the button that says Delete Files and Delete Cookies to remove the temporary Internet files from your computer, in case you are using Internet Explorer 7, then you would have the option of Delete under Browsing History. Click on that and then click on Delete Files adn Delete Cookies button. Restart the computer and check the performance.

What is the total capacity of your D drive and what is the complete error message that you get when you try to access the drive?

In this case you need not tamper the D drive. It is backing up all the data which is being added over the time yuo are using the PC.

I think a virus running real slow

Hello,

If it's in the internet browser only and not the whole computer, then try using a different website browser like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Safari.

If the whole computer is slowing down, then run a full anti-virus scan. If no viruses are found, then do a disc clean up. GO to start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disc Clean up

Delete all unneccessary files. Just put a check mark on all. After that, restart your computer. Install or update the device drivers - You can use RadarSync to update them all so that you won't miss any outdated driver in the computer.

I hope this helps!

If you have any questions, please drop me a line.

How to use System Recovery console (steps)

Starting a Recovery

Turn on the computer and immediately begin pressing the F10 key repeatedly until a Recovery Screen appears.
You can also start a recovery from recovery discs, or from Windows. For more information refer to Performing a Full System Recovery in Windows XP .

Recovery is taking too long
If your computer stops responding after using the recovery program, do the following:

NOTE:If the computer appears to have stopped responding after restarting from a recovery, please wait, it may take several hours or longer to complete the initial Windows XP setup process, especially if a recovery was run from a recovery disc set sent by HP. A Standard recovery may also take longer, depending on how many files are stored in user accounts (like in My Documents ).

1 Exit the stalled recovery process by pressing the POWER button on the PC until the power turns off, this takes approximately five seconds.
2 Before recovering, disconnect personal media drives, printers, scanners, cameras, camera-type memory cards, and other devices that did not originally come with the PC.
3 If you are using recovery discs, be aware of the following items:
4 If you created the recovery discs using Recovery CD Creator, be sure to run the recovery from the same drive that you used to create the discs.
5 Clean the discs with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth wetted with distilled water. Wipe from the center of the disc to the outside edge. You may also use disc cleaning kits or disc restoration kits from your local computer store. These kits produce better results than using cloth and water.
6 You may also use available CD/DVD Drive cleaning kits to clean the laser reading lens of the CD or DVD drive.
Try running a full system recovery again from the hard drive by turning the on the computer and pressing the F10 key until a Recovery Screen appears. This performs the recovery from the hard drive.
7 If the recovery stops when recovering from the hard drive, use the section Disc errors occur during the recovery process to eliminate errors on the drive. Try recovering again after the disk errors are removed.

How to restore system

im assuming you have the recovery disk

Restart the computer and press the pause/break key on the keyboard.

This key will slow down the boot process and allow you to see the motherboard BIOS access key that you'll need to press in order to access the motherboard BIOS.

Press the respective motherboard access key and check the motherboard BIOS for a boot sequence.

Change the settings in the boot sequence so the primary boot device or the first boot drive is the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.

Insert the system recovery disc into the disc drive.

Restart the computer and allow it to boot up before doing anything.

A black screen should show up with the words Press any key to boot from disc CD/DVD.
Press a key to have the system boot from the recovery disc.

Allow the system to load.

Follow the on-screen instructions on how to install the rest of the operating system.

There are many different settings for you to choose.
If the operating system is just a little out of whack, you can choose to repair it.

The system recovery disc will contain important drivers and software for all the components connected to the computer system.

If you do not have a system restore disc you can search the Internet for drivers and software that are packaged for your specific eMachines model.

Restore the BIOS to their default settings so the hard drive is primary boot sequence.

This is an optional step.

You can leave the CD-ROM drive as the primary boot drive, but it will slow down the startup process by a few seconds.

hope this helps

Reset the BIOS to its default settings then restore the Computer to the original factory settings by performing System Recovery using the OEM Recovery Discs set provided by the manufacturer. This will help you decide whether the issue is related to the keyboard or due to inappropriate drivers or utilities.

If you made your recovery discs, then call up gateway and tell them you have defective discs, they will send you the factory install discs for free, try them and I bet you will have better results....Restore discs you make yourself are extreemly picky and are easliy ruined if something happens while youo are burning them (someone sends you an IM or email, windows auto updates) with all the hidden processes running in the background any one of them could have caused a glitch while you were making recovery cd's
