You didn't say how old it is, - but likely the cost effective solution (if it is more than 5 years old) is : buy a new washer.

It sounds like you have a defective lid switch. This is a typical symptom when the washer stops when it gets to the rinse cycle and won't drain. You can check by opening and closing the washer lid and listening for a "clicking" noise as the lid switch activates. The switch is located on the right hand side of the wash tub opening and is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a lid strike) through a small hole. You also attempt to use a small screwdriver and push down on the lid switch contact through the hole to see if the switch will make contact. Typically the switch either comes loose, the lid strike breaks off, or the switch breaks. If you diagnose the problem and it turns out to be the switch, you can use the following link for instructions on how to replace it:

Replacement parts can be found at searspartsdirect.com. Just type in your model number and your part can be found under the "Top & Cabinet" heading on the next page as item 11 (part #3949247). The lid strike can be found under the same heading as item number 20 (part #358684).
NOTE: You do not have to drain the wash tub to replace the lid switch. The switch repair does not require you to move the washer. Let the washer to the work. With the switch replaced, the washer should drain on its own by placing it on the SPIN cycle. You can also make a by-pass by using the old lid switch. With the old lid switch removed, simply cut the white plug off the end of the switch, leaving about an inch or two of wire (This is the connector that's attached to the SWITCH, NOT the timer!). Cut the middle wire flush and splice the two remaining wires. You now have a by-pass that you can connect to the timer plug to drain the washer. This will also enable you to use the washer until your part arrives. CAUTION: It is not recommended to leave the washer in this state, as the tub will no longer stop when the lid is opened. You will have to stop it by manually pushing the timer in, or wait until the timer completes the full wash cycle.

I just encountered the same problem. I think the operation of the machine is such that the motor turns one direction for the spin cycle, and the other direction for the agitate cycle. I am replacing my motor, as I think i have a bad winding on the reverse. I will let you know.
