Norton Antivirus 2009 causes blue screen error when reading CD-RW

After installing Norton Antivirus Toshiba laptop with Windows XP Pro crashes with Blue Screen Error BAD_POOL_ERROR after inserting a CD-RW disc in the DVD drive. Works OK with CD-R discs.

Norton Support removed Norton Antivirus and I can read/write CD-RW discs again. Then they reinstalled Norton Antivirus and the problem returned. After 4 hours on Chat to Norton Support they told me to go to Microsoft because chkdsk on C: drive showed some errors. Then they cut me off. I have no faith in their support and have requested a refund.

Will look for different Antivirus software but hope others take heed of this issue before going down the same path.

THIS is a very faulty anti-virus...so ...if yo want all to be the same ...just reinstall the operating system ...rebuild the drivers and programs ...to be sure that you get rid of all the features from that anti-virus...I recomand to use a free AVG8.5..its reliable and easy to use.. and free I have never had any problems with it ...

I think everyone should file a complaint with Better Business Bureau about Norton 2009 antivirus software. This is the first time I ever had problems with Norton products. I even had a techie try to fix it - Didnt work. "Claims I had a virus and to call an 800 number to get it removed for a fee". That's ridiculous! I paid $$ for a piece of software that is ****!!! I had nothing but problems ever since I bought this garbage - to include the "blue screen of death"Constantly crashing!!. How do I Know - it happens on virgin computers too that have never been on the net. Never had any problems until it was loaded on the computer!! I have spoken to MANY people and they all had the same/similar problem. Norton should either refund the money or give us compensation like a free 2010 antivirus. As a result I will NEVER BUY NORTON PRODUCTS - neither will many of my friends/associates!! If this keeps happening maybe it's time to file a class action lawsuit.

Hi i have a Toshiba Satellite Pro L300 i have reformatted the hard drive and am trying to instal windows xp Professional Genuine CD. I can access bios utility no problem and i start install for winxp it...

This because you dont have AHCI drivers required for Win XP and you set in BIOS either sata controller or ide controller to an AHCI. You must set to native IDE or anything else like that.
If you wish set an AHCI driver you must press F6 during starting windows XP setup. And put the drivers (get it here) to floppy disk, it will prompted to install required drivers..
Another way to install driver without floppy disk you must inject the driver to windows XP installation CD...

P.S : you cant put the drivers onto floppy, because it wont be read by Windows XP setup..

It sounds to me that unfortunately you have an error on your recorded CD and there will be nothing you can do to repair that.
The installation of Norton should not cause the problem itself an error on the hard drive will usually cause that problem.

Have you unisntalled all the Linksys sofftware through add/remove software. I had a similar problem with an IOGEAR Bluetooth transceiver, I did the setup from the CD, my laptop (Dell C640) blue screened each time. I uninstalled all the IOGEAR software and my laptop stopped blue screening. I never installed the software for a wireless router, I always use the WEB interface and my life is my simplier.

Sony CRX835E CD-RW drive, Blue screen of Death on inserting CD-R

Bad Norton install. Actually bad Norton. Its causing driver corruption. The fact that it appears only when you insert a cd-r it's just random occurence, it could have happened as well when you would have tried to print something.
Best fix: just get rid of Norton , it's useless anyway. Get a decent antivirus for start. Otherwise uninstall it using the official uninstaller (not by using its uninstaller), run a registry cleaner, install it again using this time a diferent location and hope to gods that this time it won't screw your pc.

To run the Microsoft Windows Installer if Norton AntiVirus was installed from the CD
  1. Insert the Norton AntiVirus CD into the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • If the installation program appears, then click Browse the CD
    • If the installation program does not appear, then double-click the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop, and then double-click the CD-ROM drive icon.
  3. Double-click the MSI folder.
  4. Do one of the following:
    • In Windows 98/Me, double-click the WIN9x folder.
    • In Windows 2000/XP, double-click the WINNT folder.
  5. Do one of the following:
    • In Windows 98/Me, double-click the Instmsi.exe file.
    • In Windows 2000/XP, double-click Instmsiw.exe if you have Windows 2000/XP.
  6. In the next dialog box, click Yes.
  7. After the rollback has finished, then reinstall Norton AntiVirus.
Follow the instruction in Reinstalling your Symantec program after a failed installation or after you see error messages to start the computer without any programs running on startup and then reinstall your Norton program.

If these steps do not fix the problem, then go on to the next section.

To run the Microsoft Windows Installer if Norton AntiVirus was installed from a downloaded version
  1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Find (or Search) > Files or Folders.
  2. Ensure that "Look in" is set to the drive where you downloaded Norton AntiVirus, and that "Include subfolders" is checked.
  3. In the "Named" or "Search for..." box, do one of the following:
    • In Windows 98/Me, type the following:

      instmsi.exe
    • In Windows 2000/XP, type the following:

      instmsiw.exe
  4. Click Find Now or Search Now.
You might see many files with this name. Look for the file with this name that is located in either the Symantec_Norton_AntiVirus_2003 or the your Windows temporary file location depending on your version of Norton AntiVirus.
  5. In the Search Results window, do one of the following, depending on your version of Windows:
    • In Windows 98/Me, double-click Instmsi.exe.
    • In Windows 2000/XP, double-click Instmsiw.exe.
  6. In the next dialog box, click Yes.
This will undo the changes that were made to your system during the first failed installation.
  7. After the process finishes, then reinstall Norton AntiVirus.
Follow the instruction in Reinstalling your Symantec program after a failed installation or after you see error messages to start the computer without any programs running on startup and then reinstall your Norton program.

Norton Internet Security 2009 Causes Blue Screen of Death.

Hi there
Thats Norton for you! this is a very heavy and memory hungry program, it takes control of your computer and if you have not got enough system or virtual memory it will cause the pc all kinds of problems. To fix this either upgrade the system memory or don't use Norton, use AVG free instead, its a lighter program and lets you have some speed back over the internet.

good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!
