Ok ...the issue is only that it might recognize the operating (win98) system if its installed on it ..if it was just a slave there will be no problems..just attach it ..on the bus and power ...and boot the system ...if you want you may use a partition magic program to format and rename it ...but you can do that with the xp ...by clicking right on the drive in my computer and format from there ... if it doesn't want to format it ..just boot from the installation cd ( xp) and continue like a normal installation until you are at the point where you have to choose the partition to install the program ...choose the new added hard disk and format it ...by deleting and reformat ....but after this just stop the installation and restart the old OS ...but I'm sure that you will be able to format it quick from xp directly ...so , just attach it and boot...click my computer to see if it sees it ..and format

I got an old compaq it was originally running 98 now is running xp i got it after this was done i cannot get the bios to come up ive tried every thing on these post it still does not could the person that...

no ...to get to bios ..even if it is an old model try to press f10 on start ..It is known that from all computer's manufacturers..the hp is the only one that uses this key instead of normal del key ..If you pay attention on start the key is indicated on screen ..
By the way ..If it has a bios password just open it up ..and remove the bios battery from the motherboard and will clear the cmos settings to factory defaults..
To reinstall it you will need a windows xp disk ..and make sure you set the boot order in bios to boot from the CD first ..and save using f10 key..
Pay attention on what you are doing cause it may be strange ...it is an old model and has nothing logical in it ..Good luck ..you;ll need it ..!

Compaq SR1650NX HARD DRIVE MESSED UP RECOVERY DISK WON'T WORK REPLACED HARD DRIVE CAN'T GET BIOS TO RECONIZE HARD DRIVE SHOWS UP IN BOOT BUT NOT IN MAIN HP SAID TO INSTALL NEW OS HAD OLD 98SE LOADED WORKED...

Are you trying to set up a raid configuration? If not I would reformat using the 98 disk and reinstall. (You may be able to skip installing 98, try installing xp first and it should ask for the disk containing the software (win98) that qualifies for the upgrade.

Seagate external harddrive with windows 98 OS

Remove (or take to your local computer shop) the Win 98 hard drive from the computer.
Put this drive in an external USB drive enclosure.
Plug this enclosure into a Windows XP vintage computer.
Copy the data to this computer.

Save Win 98 drive for posterity!

Supposed to have 20 GB of memory, only have 1.99GB

Use windows 98 to make a rescue disk (3 1/2 floppy)
use that emergency disk to repartition and format the hard drive. You can probley use fat16.

Swaping hdd

You have half a dozen reasons why this will not work. The Operating system (XP) does not recognise the different hardware, the Bios doesn't recognise the MBR (the file structure of the harddrive) and you have all the wrong hardware drivers installed.
There is a way to do this if you have the original XP installation disk, install the harddrive, put the XP installation disk in the CD/DVD drive and set the machine to boot from the CD/DVD first. When the machine boots up and goes to install XP follow the instructions as if you are doing a fresh install, when SetUp attempts to format the harddrive it will discover you already have a version of XP installed and will give you the option to repair it, go ahead with the repair and MAYBE SetUp will be able to see and install the correct hardware drivers. If not you are looking at Slaving the harddrive, saving your personal files and then formatting the harddrive and reinstalling XP fresh.

Transfer of old laptop's condent to external harddrive

Windows 98 don't have pre-installed drivers for mass storage, like external hdd, pen drive, flush memory etc.

So, you should install the driver for your external hdd then win 98 will recognize it. And you can use it. For you external drive driver you can surf your external manifacturer site.

If any problem Ask me.

Thanks

sounds like you need to update the BIOS on your MB. It may be too old though.
