Question about Apple iPod nano 2nd Generation MP3 Player
I have an ipod nano 2nd generation 4GB. It was in my purse & I found it on & playing several times over a period of months. Now, it will not hold a charge, though it will work when plugged via usb to my laptop.
I'm fairly sure the battery needs replacing because I've left it on the USB charger for hours & the battery life is unchanged.
My question is: would that cause it not to be recognized by my computer (including ''unknown device'' under Universal Serial Bus Controllers in Device Manager), ''USB Device Not Recognized'' message when plugged in & no sign of it anywhere in iTunes 184.108.40.206 (latest version)? I've already held the center & menu spots simultaneously until the apple appeared, removed the ''unknown device'' in the device manager & watched it return, rebooted laptop (vista home 64 bit), held center & menu, then center & left, clicked on various menu items & ''quit'' to next one since they simply displayed info I didn't know what to do with, plugged into different usb port... not neccessarily in that order...and nothing has changed.
Is it likely that a new battery will put it back in working order or are these (unrecognized & unseen) symptoms of something else?
Can you restore to factory settings?
it may need new battery...even if battery is dead it will still display apple sign but wont sync or charge.

Dont bother replacing the battery on your own or through a 3rd party because it most likely is the firm ware and apple will charge you a flat fee regardless of the issue. i have the same issue with my ipod, except that it would hold a charge for days before i tried to update it and had my computer die before it finished. now it tries to boot up over and over.
