My gateway mx6446 laptop has a red flashing power light. I bought a new battery it worked for 5 - 10 minutes and said it was low on power, I had it plugged in but it was not charging. I bought a new charger / power cord and still it will not boot up. Is there something on the mother board that is bad or is there something else I can do to check what is wrong. I don't understand what the problem could be. Thank you.

Re: Gateway mx6446 laptop red flashing light
The problem is with the main board in the power supply section.
This is because the powersupply must have been short and the battery is not getting charged because the power supply isnt charging the battery.
Kindly contact the manufacturer for a main board related issue and there is no way we can lay our hands on the main board the best thing would be to go for a replacement.
a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Try taking out battery and plug in power. If it works, battery is faulty. If not, Try taking out your hard disk plug in power, if it works, hard disk is faulty. If not, Try taking out memory card, if there's a sound, memory card faulty. If no sound, it's your motherboard that is causing the error.
Note: If machine is under warranty no need to pay for the repairs.
Flashing red light 3 times and won't boot. I recently recalibrated the battery and again the 3 flashing red lights. Seem to be draining the battery fast. It's also a new battery...which work for about 2 weeks before the 3 flashing red lights first started. Now 2 batteries later. It won't boot.
When the computer is off, unplug the power cord from the laptop and then plug it back in. See if the charge light (lightning bolt symbol next to the led) comes on or turns green/blue. If it doesn't your power supply may not be working, even if the light on the supply is on. Second is the battery may be damaged. Remove the battery and see if you can power on at all.
If it boots with only the cord, the battery is bad/shorted forcing shutdown.
if your battery is dead and your not able to use the adapter to keep it going, its probably a dead ac adapter. is the light where its connected ? light on the box (if it has one), the outlet you are plugged into have power to it ? try another plug
Unfortunately, you can't solve this problem. What I have learned as the tech working on a customers gateway mt6451 is that Gateway dropped the ball when they bought a cheap (they spent 5 cents instead of 20 cents) motherboard component that allows the adapter to charge battery and run the notebook without the battery installed, the component seems to have a 1 year if that life. I am surprised they haven't been sued or forced to extend the warranty (like HP had to with their dv8000 series notebooks) althought they would have to replace the motherboard with one that has an improved component on it. How do you sue a company or force them to extend the warranty for a replacement that is made with a better component?
