Try inserting it into the back first, then the front. One side is spring loaded and the filter has to be inserted against the spring first, and depressing it, while the other end is pushed up into the filter frame and released to secure it in the frame.

The machine stops mid way through the wash and stays full of water. I have to drain it at least three times to get rid of all the water and then spin, cloths are still very wet even after spin. It will not...

Sounds like the filter is clogged. The filter is located behind the silver plate at the back of the machine at the bottom. Four screws hold it on. Drain out all the water. The filter is inside the big black rubber hose attached between the pump and the main drum. Remove the plastic clip holding it to the pump unit and then the metal cir clip holding it to the main drum. Inside is a white molded cone and a big white ball which floats. You will find a lot of junk here, clean out thoroughly. To refit put white cone back inside just as you found it, at the bottom, fit ball back into the cone. Attach to the bottom to the drum and re-fasten the cir clip. Finally reconnect the gator to the pump unit and tighten the plastic clip. Check out the pump too before reconnecting.

Clean filter

You should find this described in a number of other problem posting about slow drainage, or wet clothes, or long cycles with multiple stops and flashing green lights on the Stop/Pause button.

Just remove the lower front panel (three screws on the bottom edge), set a bucket catch water under the 3-4 inch round white plastic cover behind the panel and unscrew the cover. Pull out the cover to reveal it has an attached strainer/filter and clean it out. You may have lots of small stuff; coins, pens, paper clips, etc. backed up into the black hose that connects the drum to the pump/filter housing. Rake those out, screw the cover back on and you're good to go!

The washing machine starts, then stops, then starts, then stops

The filter on your pump is probably clogged with lint and stuff. You have to remove the bottom front panel, 3 torx screws underneath. The panel will drop and come off. Drain off the excess water from the drain pipe you see. The white filter cover is right in front. Get yourself a plastic bag to collect water. Unscrew the filter cover and twist the filter out. Clean out all the stuff and put it back in carefully. Check your pump too, comes after the filter.

On some models the filter is located ‘inside’ the big hose from the bottom of the tub. This takes more time to clean.

Next run your washer with 2 cups of bleach, hot water. After it starts agitating stop the washer & let it remain for 2 hours. Then continue the wash.
Try using powders for 'front loaders'

When i drive my vauxhall omega 1999 auto 2.5 cd it reaches 60mph then it starts to shudder as if i am in the wrong gear i have to put my foot down to correct this problem and the engine smells o oi what is...

I'm going to guess and say have the catalytic converter checked.  If that's it...it will also be giving you poor performance and mileage.
Also replace the exhaust sensors and check the plugs for condition and gap.  Replace the air filter and pcv valve.
