Dried salt water inside of Carl Zeiss lens in my sony dsc 170

I have a sony dsc 170 camera and while i was in the ocean a wave splashed the camera. it instantly shut off and i removed the battery. i dried it out with a hair dryer on cool setting and reinstalled the battery the next day and it worked. the problem is that there are spots (dried salt water) on the inside of the Carl Ziess lens...it looks like spots and you can see the haze if you take a picture.

Can it be removed and cleaned without damaging it? i've been told that it cannot be done.

thanks,

BTW, it is a Sony DSC W170. The camera can be bought now for around 100.00. Is it even worth it not to try it myself? is there any type of disassembly instructions on the net? i talked to an electronics guy today who said that it would damage the lens to clean it from the inside but that sounds like an easy way out for him. He repairs my computers, tv's etc.

    thanks,

No, unfortunately it has to be sent in to have the lens cleaned. I have sent mine in for 'dust bunnies' that leave little spots on the lens and it was successful. Good Luck!

In all honesty you should not attempt to fix this yourself. Because of the internal components it would be best to either send it in to Sony or an authorized dealer. I am sending you a link so that you can contact them and see what they have to say. Sorry I couldn't have been more help.

Yes you can try to do it by yourself if you really like, and the chance of having it fix on your own will be small and hopefully it wont led to a lens replacement...

Fuji finepix s1500 water splash damage. my fujifilm finepix s1500 had a slight water splash from a wave on a beach. Now it wont start up/work. It was dried immediately, and i underdstand that salt water...

It might be the salt water has got into its main chip circuit board or may be its blocking the power switch circuit. And there is a chance of the lens motor being stuck by it. You can also try another battery or recharge your battery and try it again. If you have no other choice that throwing it and buying another one then try washing it with normal water, let it dry then try again.

Camera got wet in the ocean and now the screen on the back of the camera does not work/display anything - just stays black.

If you tried to turn it on without properly drying it for a week, you probably fried the circuits. Even if you didn't, the salt water would eventually corrode everything inside the camera anyway.

My Sony Cybershot DSC-W120 Super steady shot Camera won't turn on

I have the same problem, but when I remove the MS Pro Duo card (1GB) from the camera it works fine again. The memory card works fine in a pc memory card reader. Is there a problem with the Sony camera built-in card reader?

My A520 was splashed by a wave and after a few days drying out when I switch on all I get is a white screen. The lens retract as normal but that is all I have. Any ideas?

When the water evaporated, salt was left behind. Also, if you switched it on before it completely dried out (could take a week or more) you could have shorted out the sensor and the electronics.
