Not a surprise because USB 2.0 standard is common these days and operates at up to 480 mbps. Your network connection is 100MB if wired and potentially 11 mbps if older Wi-FI or 54mbps if a little newer. The advantage is distance - wired up to 330 feet and wireless depends on a lot of factors. USB is really intended to work at 10 feet or less. Other factors can limit network speed dramatically like the switch or wiring and errors.
SOURCE: I have an Epson Stylus Photo R220 Printer connected to a linksys print server, but
Well, The first thing you should do is to try to test of the print server is properly connecting to the printer. Check the linksys printserver manual and look for how to print a status sheel from the print server. Once done, get the IP address of the print server. Go to your laptop and navigate to control panel/printer. See if you have the driver installed or download the Vista Drivers from Epson.com/support. During the installation, it will ask you what connection type your computer uses. cancel out of the installation or choose LPT1 as the port. Once done, go back to control panel/printers.Right click the R220 icon and navigate to properties. Select ports after that and add a new port. Select Standard TCP IP port after that. Once done, the wizard will appear. Input the IP address of the printer and finish the wizard. you should be good to go after this.

There could also be too many routers on the same channel in your area; very common problem. Too many routers on the same channel in close proximity causes interference and will cause wireless devices to intermittently disconnect from the wifi. To figure out if you have this problem, download wifi analyzer from the app store. Run it and you will see how many router signals are in your area and how many router signals are on the same channel. Xfinity uses channels 1, 6, and 11 for the 2.4ghz and these hotspots are everywhere! To fix this, log into your router and pick a channel that no one is using. I always set mine to channel 8 or 3.
