Do you know if there is more than 1 fan in my notebook? If so, I assume the second one needs to be replaced?

Article from Dell provides information about overheating and the system shutdown, which occurs due to the dust accumulation over the CPU cooling fan intake grille!

In response to your question it appears to have only one fan and according to all the reviews it is known to have heat problems. You can verify the # of fans by looking at the bottom of the system and see if any fan portals are there and you will be able to see any fans beneath a grill like area. If you do not see a fan at the bottom do not be concerned as there are many laptops that use a rear exhaust fan. I reviewed all the information available on this laptop and I stand by my first recommendation. You can purchase a Belkin laptop cooler fairly reasonable at any department or electronics store, and they have a usb for power supply they help alot as I have one for my high-end Sony Vaio

My dell vostro 1000 keeps restarting like every 2-3 hrs

If its rebooting again and again after 2-3 hrs then it would be a hardware issue..your system must be heating up..it happens when the processor of the computer is heating up and there is no sufficient cooling...you can check the system fan it should be working properly..you can try opening the laptop from the bottom..clean it up if there is any dust,

Go to this link http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/vos1000/en/sm_en/index.htm
its a manual you should try cleaning fan,,removing Hinge Cover then checking processor thermal cooling assembly...you can try reset of the steps as well

First of all, you need to make sure your power adapter is providing enough power to both run the laptop & charge the battery. A very good way to do this is to compare your laptop voltage & ampere requirements (written on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop) with the voltage & ampere ratings of the power adapter. Voltages should be the same, or the power adapter's voltage about up to 0.5 volts more than the laptop's voltage rating. Amperage of the power adapter should be at least equal to or greater than the laptop's rating. It should never be less than the laptop's rating, or else the power adapter will be providing insufficient amperes to charge the battery. Of course, the power adapter's nominal amperage might be ok, but it degraded on usage. You can verify this by testing using a good or new power adapter.
If the battery did not charge using the new power adapter, take the battery off the laptop, & using a dry tooth brush, scrub in between the fins of the battery connector on the motherboard & on the battery it self, then put the battery back into the laptop & try again.
If this still did not resolve the problem, then the battery itself could be bad. Try it on another laptop, or try a good or new battery in your laptop.
If this did not work, there might be a possibility that the charging circuitry on the laptop's motherboard is defective & needs servicing. In order to do this, the laptop needs to be disassembled & the motherboard checked for defective/burned out components in the area near the DC jack. Any defective/burned out components found should be replaced, or you might need to replace the laptop's motherboard altogether

Vostro 1000 keeps running and getting hot

This could be a sign that your laptop is overheating. If you touch the laptop while it is running & you find it too hot, make sure that the fan is running properly & that the air ways are not blocked. You can blow compressed air into the cooling vents of the fan. If you notice clouds of dust coming out, then it might be a good idea to disassemble the laptop, clean the fan & air ways, & reassemble it back. If the fan has failed & is no longer running, it might need to be replaced.

My Dell Vostro 1000 keeps shutting off. Cure?

I am having the same problem.
I used to think that maybe the problem was related to overheating so I I bought a cooling pad with fan. This improved the situation somewhat, but, the problem continues.
My friend thinks it is related to the power supply/power cord.

My dell inspiron 1000 powers up for a short time then shuts down. Even when windows starts up it shuts down. How do I fix this problem.

Hi dabrow72

Sounds like an overheating issue but there are other possible causes. Make sure the fans are free from dust and debris. A can of compressed air usually does the trick but sometimes opening the laptop to manually clear the fans is required. Laptops/computers cut off by default if the cpu becomes too hot. If your fans are not spinning then it's surprising how quickly this happens. A sure sign of it being clogged fans would be having to wait a short period before the power will turn back on. You may well notice a strange noise from the fan as it trys to spin or maybe it won't be turning at all.

Does this help?

What kind of warning do you get? i would update the BIOS from dell.com. also, get rid of Vista and get Windows 7. apart from that this could also be a motherboard issue.

Dell Vostro 1000 shut down and won't turn back on

nope, it is your dc power regulator board. you will note this happens if the battery is in or out of the laptop. that is the key test. some regulators are on the main board and some are seperate for this reason. I think the vostro though is on the main board. A little board re-work will resolve this issue after replacing some components, but this is way beyond a home user's ability.. trust me on this. Sorry for the bad news. Thanks!
