Question about Freezers
My Roper upright freezer is having problems. Some food stays rock solid and some food is soft. Ice cream, for instance, is always very soft. Also we lost a couple of items on the top shelf in the frost so we defrosted the unit, thinking that too much frost might have something to do with the problem. The frost is back on that top shelf and we still have the problem. I tried turning up the setting but this doesn't seem to help.
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

That is normal. The refrigerant runs through those shelves. They are the evaporator side of the unit. That is where the freezing effect comes from.
Check door seals for leaking air.
Keep door openings to a minimum.
Get in there and get out.
Those things will help prolong frost/ice buildup.

if the compressor is running, the fan beside the compressor and the fan in the freezer should both be running, dirty coils can cause a problem. frost buildup on back of freezer wall is indicative of defrost problem.

I have had the same problem with my frigidaire/electrolux upright freezer... I am researching to see if there is a pattern. Once or twice a year for the past few years, the freezer defrosted itself. I found the outside of the unit to be VERY hot to the touch around the time that this occurred.
We typically unplug it for a chunk of time when this happens and then replug it. It has always begun working again.
Sadly, we have lost many groceries and have had to clean many bloody meat messes as a result of this. ANYONE buying this freezer should save their receipt... That way, they can return it or have it repaired when it fails. I hate to think of sending all of these failing monstrosities to the landfill... =(
