It's possible the choke is sticking and the shafts could need lubricating. Check the float as will it might be sticking Is there an adjusting screw on the carb the fuel adjuster may need to be readjusted to run leaner.

SOURCE: Jacobsen snowblower that will only run with the choke on full.

1. Check the fuel line for cracks/breaks. If it is o.k., then:

2. You willneed to disassemble the carburetor and spray with carb.cleaner.

3. Use a Den Tek Brush, (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=165357&catid=1152), to clean the small portals in carb., including the jet. These portals can become blocked.

4. You may need to change the diaphragm while you are in there.

5. Reassemble the carburetor.

6. Make sure the air breather is clean.

If you need further assistance, let me know.

SOURCE: craftsman 8hp snowblower starts but will not stay

Your snowblower carburator is gummed up. Go to an auto parts store and get a can of a carb. cleaner called seafoam. Follow the directions as far as how much to put into the snowblower gas tank. Run it for a few minutes and it will clear up. Regards, Joe

Sounds like you coil is over heating after running a few minutes. The windings are seperating, then when it sools they make contact again. Try replacing the coil.

SOURCE: Craftsman II model 917255911. Will

I couldn't find the manual for your tractor but I did fiind one for a 917255917 model it calls for a 71-25231 snow thrower. The 842 model you listed must not be complete number. There are several different models that start with 842. Does your tractor have the horizontal engine that has clutch on front, and drive pully on rear of engine? I used to have one like that and I had a sears blower on it. You'll need wheel weights and chains too.

2 stage craftsman snowblower1 year old with 5 hours running time won't run with the choke off

it is a carburetor issue. inside the carburetor the fuel gums up especially in seasonal equipment as snowblowers. look inside the bowl and see if there is any water. take it off and clean it real good with carburetor cleaner. it will run like new.

Adjust choke

I am not sure about yours but my Craftsman has a adjusting screw in the carb to set the gas. If it is choking you screw it in a little and if it falters screw it out a little. You should be able to adjust with it running. Just turn a little at a time. Mine uses a flat screw driver.

Hello I have a 8 horsepower craftsman show thrower, the engine is stuttering I think it's because it is running on CHOKE. the lever is loose and I have no idea how to replace or tighten it. Help! snow is...

Hi, You will have remove the carburetor shroud and then check the linkages from the choke lever to the choke.
Unfortunately Craftsman does not give detailed parts listings for most of the motors on snowblowers on either their manual site, managemylife.com or their parts site, searspartsdirect.com but I suggest you check anyway. You need the model number of your snow blower. Iit will look like 123.123456.
Even if you can't find a parts breakdown I suggest taking the shroud off if you are at all familiar with working on your mower. The shroud on a snowblower just covers the carb like the air cleaner on your mower. If you can use a screwdriver and hand tools, you can do it. Take pictures with your cell phone or draw diagrams showing each piece as you take it off.
