The Merands store should be ashamed of themselves. As I see it, they misrepresented what they sold you and created a night mare for you. Now they want to walk away and personally I would not let them.
Call the store and ask for the manager. Get his name and direct phone number. Be friendly but firm. Do not lose your temper under any circumstances.
State the problem and then listen to what the manager has to say. You need a different unit, one with a remote already built in.
Stand your ground. If you get no satisfaction, ask for his supervisor. Threaten a formal complaint to the Better Business Bureau and mean it. Threaten a formal complaint to the state attorney general office and mean it.
I believe they will get you the unit you need. THAT SAID:
Can you install a a remote into what you have now. YES. WIll it be simple, or inexpensive, NO. ANY A/C tech. can obtain the remote you need and install it. Good luck.
