Good day sir/maam, im with you here, i really do have a hard time when my dvd isnt reading my disk. tell you the truth, I usually go to a friends house and ask if i could use his DVD player to read my disk, or his computer, I usually make extra copies of the disk. DVD disk are not scratch froop. If you have a computer with DVD drive, make extra copies always, and always clean the lens of your DVD portable. hope this helps.

All the dvds I insert are reading disk error.

Sounds like it is time for a new unit. your problem is not worth fixing as it is either a failing laser pickup due to age, or the laser beam is caked with tar from smoking.

New blurays are quite inexpensive.
Please dispose of the unit responsibly.

DVD SOHD-16P9S drive doesn't read any kind of CD or DVD

hi,there is no problem in drivers .
check the hardware parts
there are 2 possibilities in your case
1.the laser beam which reads the dvd or cds is malfunctioning
2.ensure that the cable & buses are properly connected

..
in case laser beam is damaged you got to get it repaired for proper functioning

all the best

My bose lifestyle 48 system suddenly stopped playing new DVDs...is there a problem with the head..I bought it only in 2008

is the discs just spinning and then stopping when you put them in the drive?
there may be a chance that the lens might just needs cleaned. suggest a dvd lens cleaner but on the down side there is a strong possibility it may be a faulty lens. dvd players aren't built to last.
always clean the dvd player from dust and keep in an open space.

Some DVDs play and some don''t. Why would that be?

Hello
It is due to weak laser beam from the laser unit. Laser Pickup Unit is one which sends laser beam to disc and recieves the reflected beam which contains the digital signal, and sends to the main circuit board for process. If laser pickup unit is faulty, the fault you designates here will occur. Replace the Laser Pickup Unit, with same type and number. OK.

My Audiovox D1788 says "no

Hello
Your Audiovox's Laser Picup Unit is in trouble. In payers, that can play both CDs and DVDs, there are different laser Beams from the same Laser Picup Unit, one have with a wavelength slightly differ to the other. When we insert a CD or DVD disc in to the player, at first the control system inside the players' circuit board will detect it, whether it is a CD, MP3 or 'DVD, by variying the wavelengths of the laser beam, and confirm it to be a CD, MP3 or DVD. Only after this detecting process, it will read its lead-in track and start to play.
In your CD player, now there is only beam that has the wavelength to play DVDs. Others are not working. That is why, it plays only DVDs and not others.
But before replacing the Laser Pick up Unit, you just replace its strip wire. Strip wire is one which connects the Laser Pickup Unit ot the mainboard. It has carbon conductors, instead of metal conductors. There is a chance to get a break in these conductors, even one of them break, will cause a problem,. As it has to move along with the laser pickup unit, when tracks the CD, the chance for a break is there. Just replace it first and see will it help you. It has clips on both ends, and after releasing the clip, it can be replaced easly. If this does not help, replace the Laser Pickup Unit, with same type and number. Insist on same type and number, as it is a critical component in your system. OK.

Will play dvd but wont play cd, could you help please, the light illuminates but the laser doesnt seem to pick up the cd

U might know that for CDs n DVDs it uses laser beams of different wavelengths. In combo drive there wud be lasers of two different wavelengths. It seems 2 me that one of the lasers[which read the CD]or its component lens is damaged.

Hope this helped.

I used a disk cleaner because I kept getting a "No Disc" message after putting one in for recording. (same disc I had used previously that worked). It still reads no disc, then I put a recorded movie in and...

It sounds like the unit may be beginning to fail. DVDs are created in one of two ways - they are either burned (when you create one with the recorder) or they are stamped (most commercial DVDs are created from a master this way.) As the unit ages, the strength of the laser used to "read" the DVD begins to get weaker and weaker, eventually becoming too weak to read even the best DVDs. Not all commercial DVDs are created equally, which means some may have a deeper, neater pit pressed into the substrate making it possible for a weak signal to get reflected and read by the hardware (hence, you will experience the ability the read some commercial DVDs and not others.)

DVDs you create at home creates the "pits" by focusing the laser beam on a dye layer and causing a dye to change from translucent to opaque. Where the dye is translucent the laser beam is reflected back to the reader and where it is opaque, not. We get the 0 and 1 state that digital signals use to reproduce/transmit signals in this way.

You may be able to get the unit serviced and have the board that sends/receives the laser beam replaced - but that may be as expensive as buying a new unit, complete with warranty.

Reads everything but ps3games

ok my friend, the blue ray laser has two high energy beams at 450nm(bluelight) and 730nm (redlight). the highpower diode on your machine im afraid has failed. The bluray light reads bluray games and bluray dvd's. the lower power red light reads audiocds and regular dvds/dvdrs. you need to install a new laser ..only 100 i charge or 160 from sony (150+TAX+2 week wait+frustration from not playing COD4)
Now if you have the newer model laser KES410ACA, then you have 2 SEPARATE light sources...these tend not to fail as often
