The manual may be helpful:

The dial at the top middle of the machine is the stitch length dial. If it isn't changing anything, your machine probably has some issues. It appears to be possibly an older mechanical model. If so, these machines sometimes seize from old dry oil. Various moving parts of the machine will begin to stick and no longer function as they should.

Wheel on right side that controls the needle up and down is very tight...

The stitch length dial is a horizontal dial (the machine diagram shows it as #27 in the manual) at the very top center. If moving it to a higher number doesn't make the stitches longer, then it's possible it is stuck or even perhaps broken.

It is possible but it will only sew a straight stitch (more than likely a 2.5MM stitch length which is a common/standard length for straight stitching.

I own a husqvarna classica 100 the problem I am having is it is skipping stitches. It is used solely as straight stitch machine.

Have you changed your needle? Try that first, if it doesn't work, the timing is off and needs repair.

My husqvarna classica 90 sews backward instead of forward. Can you help with an answer why?

Make sure the stitch selector is not set on buttonhole. If the machine has set up for a long time not being used it may be that the stitch length is stuck in reverse.
