Problems with my HP G7000 Laptop

my HP G7000 Laptop with Windows Vista 32-bit Home Premium sometimes shuts itself down then has problems either starting back up or starts up slowly and then some programs fail including windows defender causing it to shut down again, can you help?

Sounds like a failing HDD and/or overheating.
