Xbox 360 DVD Drive Not Reading Games Only DVD,CD after replacing the dvd rom

If you replaced the DVD-ROM drive yourself, some newer Xboxes do not recognize and/or function properly with older drives. I tried replacing a drive in an older Xbox with an older yet DVD-ROM drive, and it would not work. When replacing a DVD-ROM in an Xbox, it is advisable to use the same model drive, as the Xbox does strange things when you introduce different hardware. The url of a page is below that details the different drives that Xboxes use. See if your new drive is the same as the old one, and if not, that is almost certainly the issue.

I cannot play most of the games due to region code....I have an Xbox 360 pal as well as Xbox 360 ntsc console....the latter has burnt up but its DVD ROM is alright....if i change the DVD ROM of pal to ntsc...

Interesting question.

Yes you can do that but you don't need to replace the DVD Rom.
You need 2 tools: PAL-to-NTSC converter box and a voltage converter. Don't know where to buy these though. Sorry.

If you manage to get those tools then you need to refer to a guide. Here's a detailed one from e How:

Hope you get it working.

My xbox 360 says play dvd but i put in halo 3 which is a video game

Is your DVD-ROM the original one that was in it when it was purchased? If not, then there's your problem. If you replace it with another ROM from a different 360, or with an after-market 360 ROM, then it will only play movies and not the games. It requires you to hack your 360 to get the new ROM to work properly, and that's alot of stuff to do. I think that according to the rules of this website I'm not allowed to post info about how to hack & crack things. If your DVD-ROM is the original one, then maybe your need to update your firmware and even run a cleaning disc in your 360 to get it to work right. If that doesn't work, then you have the option of replacing your ROM yourself and finding the hacks to make it work right, or you can pay Microsoft about $100 to fix it for you.

360 not reading any disks

If the game discs work on another XBox 360 and won't pick up on yours it's most likely a defective DvD-ROM or the interface to the DvD-ROM.

It's possible that dirt or dust is clogged internally to the DvD-ROM and either affecting the drive or the optical assemblies.

You might try opening the shuttle, leaving it open and then unplugging the unit from the wall jack/power outlet. While the shuttle's open, blow back into the DvD-ROM assembly with some canned air. [NOTE: Be careful not to physically press the canned air's extension/straw tip against any parts of the Xbox and do NOT invert or tilt the can of air sideways as you use it. This can cause the propellant to be sprayed into the DVD unit, possibly damaging the interior parts].

If this doesn't cure your problem, I'd suggest you take the Xbox in to be serviced.
