Hello, Ray -
I am a librarian by profession and will answer your question.
Some firearm manufacturers have information on their web sites regarding firearms, giving the time frames, listed by serial number ranges, during which their firearms were manufactured. I don't find such information on the Smith and Wesson web site:
http://www.smith-wesson.com/
Therefore, I suggest you contact Smith and Wesson directly and ask your question. This web page provides a link to contact the company via email:
http://www.smith-wesson.com/customer-service/contact-us
The company probably has archival records for the serial numbers of their firearms.
