This is commonly the symptom of a lid switch malfunction. If this is a Whirlpool manufacured top loader, the following link explains how to access and/or replace the switch:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385199-replacing_lid_switch_whirlpool_top

Before assuming you have any defective parts, ensure the switch is not loose. They can come become loose and not make contact. If you have a model that uses a lid strike, make sure the lid strike on the washer lid is not broken off. This will also give you the same symptoms.

If replacement parts are required, you can purchase on line at searspartsdirect.com, appliancepartspros.com, pcappliancerepair.com or repairclinic.com. All these sites offer great service with competitive pricing, so shop all of them for the best deal.

If you have questions, or if my diagnosis is incorrect, please post back and let me know, so that I may assist you better.

NOTE: Please provide an accurate brand name and model number if further assistance is required. My assessment was based on the symptoms you provided, the picture you listed this under and the most common fail part based on my experience.

Whirlpool model # LLR6144BQ1 water fills but will not go to wash cycle.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.
This is usually caused by a failed lid switch that is item 9 this link:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=256996

First off put the washer in the spin cycle. With the lid closed see if the washer will spin. No spin also = bad lid switch. If the washer spins but will not agitate then the problem is most likely the water level pressure switch or associated air tubing. (any air leaks and it will not stop filling)
Water level switch is item 12 here:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=256996&diagram_id=28209075#d28209075
We test these with NO WATER in the machine and after connecting an external hose with the lid closed with power on by orally passing air into the small air hose we connected. It will click and the washer must agitate. If it clicks and does not agitate... again it points to the lid switch. Disconnecting this water level switch hose with ater in the maching and then re-connecting the hose WILL result in the machine overflowing. Tub MUST be empty.

You check the lid switch as you just open or close the lid. You should hear an audible CLICK as the lid is barely off of its closed position and again as the lid is almost closed. NO CLICK = bad door switch.

These are the 2 most common reasons that will correct the symptom your experiencing more than 90 percent of the time. There is a remote possibility that there is a problem with the motor / motor clutch. Motor clutch problems are noted by odd noises when motor is running and it will not spin or agitate. If the motor will spin the machine but will not agitate the machine it can be a motor winding.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

My washing machine 205DAWN does not agitate

The reasons why a washer may not agitate are:

- The motor is broken or a foreign object is jamming the motor.
- The Lid switch is not detecting the lid is closed so the machine doesn't agitate.

It's a good idea to check the user manual for warranty information.

My washer doesn't agitate or spin, it just drains and fills up

That sounds like your lid switch. The lid switch on most models of top load washers will be bypassed on fill and drain. As a safety the lid must be closed for agitate and spin.

The lids switch is a pretty easy part to replace and is inexpensive.

Won't spin, makes clunking noise, drains fine

If it agitates fine , with normal noise , drains with lid closed , then the problem is probably the transmission .

Sounds like the lid switch is acting up on you.

Won't agitate unless manually depress lid switch

There is a plastic "finger" that is attached to the lid that would normally close the switch when you close the lid. Is it still on the lid? If not, you can go to the sears web site for repair parts. You will need your model number.
Good luck.

Kenmore 90 series agitation problem

suppose to not spin unitl the lid is closed( safety reasons) the reason for the "weak agitation " is a bad set of agitator dogs. by removing the center fabric softener cup, you can get to and unscrew the center shaft bolt7/16. after removing the bolt, the agitaor will remove and the agitator dogs canbe replaced. part number 80040.youll need to split the agitator top and bottom to insall them . they simply slide into place.
