Right hydro gear moans and fails to work after 30-40 minutes

I have a 50" Cub Cadet zero turn mower that works fine for approximately 30-40 minutes and then the right hydro gear begins to moan and turning to the left becomes increasingly difficult until finally it becomes impossible to turn to the left. After the mower is allowed to cool for 15-20 minutes operation is normal again for a short period of time at which the process repeats itself. The certified dealer has only been instructed by Cub Cadet to replace the valve body twice. The problem still persists.

Why would this only happen after 30-40 minutes and not happen all the time?

  • ZeroTurn Jul 30, 2009

I would lean more to the hydraulic pressure loss than the control lever. The lever moves the same distance in the beginning as it does 30-40 minutes later. What would cause the pressure loss?

Thanks for the help. Any suggestions on how to persuade Cub Cadet to replace the pump. They have instructed the authorized mechanic to replace the valve body twice, but the problem continues. It's like they know that there is a problem with the pump but do not want to replace it.

Thanks for the help. I will suggest this. After all, replacing the valve body has already been tried twice. The mechanic was able to replicate the problem. After opening up the gear, he replied that he was unable to detect anything. Maybe this time Cub Cadet will see that their solution is not solving the problem. Again, thank you for the advice.

Yes. This solution was helpful. I only hope that we can persuade the Cub Cadet representative to replace the gear.

I think that you have a have a hydro pump failing in athe two-pump system. The pump may fail after some time because some debris that passed the filter and entered into the pump is jamming the pump after some time.
Since the pump is expensive, it is worth having it checked by a mechanic while the problem occurs. If a single pump fails on its own and there is no electrical problem, then the pump must be replaced or rebuilt.

they do not want to replace because the pump is a couple of thousands. Insist with the mechanic to test the tractor when the problem happens, if the mechanics rule out any other cause and the valve body had already been replaced they should go for the pump, even if the pump failing after a while suggests to replace the valve body.

When you move a steering/speed lever, you are controlling the
flow of fluid through the transmission and the rotational speed or the forward/reverse direction of a
drive wheel. Maximum lever movement means maximum fluid flow, which translates into a rapidly
turning wheel.

I think the control from the lever is causing your problem.

If it's not the control lever issue then I would go straight to the wheel motor.

It probably begins to loose hydraulic pressure as it runs, slowly loosing pressure and flow.

Ok, but how do you fix this issue? costly?

What are the propper oils and lubes for the model 127 cub cadet?

Well, personally, i use a normal engine oil; what ever your preferance. i use pennzoil. for the engine, the weight that they call for at cub cadet in those days is winter-5w20-summer 10w30. they call for a low ash oil, you can get it at any cub cadet or internation harvestor dealership. the rear end, if its a hydro stat takes hy-tran fluid, also sold at the dealer. you cant use anything else in a hydro, theyre real touchy. if its gear differential, any 80-100w gear oil will work. hopefully this helps, ive been dealing with old cub cadets for a close to 20 or more years. good luck!

On my 2007 cub cadet zero turn my right wheel will stop working

This does not sound good if its still under warranty get it back there asap... sounds like a lazy drive weather its juat a faulty drive or your hydro pump not feeding that side, it should not be unservicable after 90hrs... even if its out of warranty get it fixed asap as the metal may spread to your pump or other drives and that will be very expensive.

Problem with left side hydrostatic transmission

This is a well documented problem with cub cadet ZT transmissions. They tend to go bad after 200 hours of use. Sometimes having the dealer change the transmission oil will help (they need to remove the transmissions to do this!). Most times, the transmission is gone & must be replaced ($800-$900).

Sound to me like a design defect. My ZT-50 lasted only 4 years. Needless to say, the replacement was not a cub cadet.
