1. you should check that the monitor lead is inserted correctly and that there are no bent / broken pins in the end of the plug. If so you would need to replace that lead
2 would require that you check all your connections and if you are using PS2 type connections then really do check they are in the correct places.
belkin and many others in that price range vary in performance. You may also find that if your keyboard has special media keys or other wonderful functions, they might not work and this a problem inherent in all low end KVM's
