Question about Sony TSL S9000L (TSL-S9000L) DAT Tape Drive

SONY TSL-S9000L error message

My Sony TSL-S9000L tape backup unit is giving an error message. I am unsure if the tapes are just stuck or if the unit's parts are bad. I get the following message when I have it plugged in:

Ldr HW error

Could you please help?

It is running on a Macintosh OS 9.2.2 I believe that is close to the version #. I do not have it in front of me. It was setup on my friends network and has been running backup scripts running through the retrospect software it uses. So it has been running everyday since 2003.

I work on Windows based PC's and know how to fix hardware, but on Windows machines. Do you think that one of the parts like a board or something is bad on this unit? I tried looking for that error code fix, but couldn't find anything.

Also, on Mac's, is there an Event Viewer?

  • RIO2007 Nov 26, 2007

Ok, I will further into it. The Mac hasn't had anything that has changed or been updated. From my experience with hardware, I would say this is something with the tape drive unit. I was hoping to find the error message resolve through Sony. Due to the holidays and the weekend, I have not been able to call around with questions.

Currently, I am looking into other updated solutions that will replace this tape backup unit, yet I still will want to repair this. I thank you for your help and I will if any of what you wrote helps to fix the problem.

I need a little more information to better assist you with your problem. What Operating System are you running and how old is this unit?
Is this the first time you are using this device?
Also look at the event viewer for info on the actual error, which could help to better explain what the problem might be.

It been a while since I have had to support a Macintosh issue. But I will try to apply what I do remember about the Mac OS. This indicates a loader hardware error. First I would try to troubleshoot this issue by disconnecting the device from the system and doing a reboot without this device on line. Then reconnect and reboot again. If the error continues, it might be indicating a problem with the tape drive. However, befor making that assumption I would try some of the following procedures. It has been a while since I've had to troubleshoot a mac problem. It is possible that something has been changed in the configuartion of your friends Mac. Has he recently installed something new to that system? If he has, then uninstall or turn off that addition. This can be accomplished by turning off unnecessary extensions through the Mac extensions manager. You might also check the extensions pertaining to this Tape Drive or reinstall the driver and extension for this drive. There could be a possible conflict with some other driver or device.

Try these approaches and let me know the results.

AIT-3 Tape Ejects when they put in MSSQL 4027

You will not find the list of the error codes on the internet. I know that Error Code: 0x81 is a "Reel" problem as I was just told by Sony Support. You should call them, have you serial number at hand when you do so. Check for a Telephone contact number.
Good luck, Bruno

My tape was stuck in the unit, managed to free it up and noe I have an erro code of E3 on the LED screen, what does this mean?

First you must make sure you got all of the video tape out of the unit. Unplug your unit from power and check for any remaining tape. Any small piece of tape could jam your unit and give you error code E3. Once you know you removed all tape leave your unit unplugged for 5 minutes to see if it clears up the error code. E3 is a drum rotation error code and usually clears after plugging the unit back into the power. If this did not help then further repair will be necessary.

I hope this helped you out! Good Luck!

Beatcam SP error message

BVW-75 error 09 is "threading motor time out". Look for something obstructing the travel of the threading ring inside the deck (the ring which pulls the tape around the video head).

UVW-1800 SONY VTR - s-reel error

Both these error codes indicate a problem with the supply reel motor.
The first code (02-058) indicates that the reel motor is drawing too much current, which could be caused by a bad motor, defective driver circuit, or even a bad tape. The second code (02-803) indicates tape slack, caused by the defective supply reel motor. FIRST thing to check would be a possible bad tape. Try different tapes and see if the problem persists. If it does, it may be time to find a technician.

I had/have a similar problem with a SONY SDX-700C.
Emailed Sony tech support (very helpful) who suggested sending them the diagnostics from their TapeTool utility (qv). They then recommended running the cleaning tape 3 times, which seems to get it working (but the 'clean me' light still comes on every 7-10 backups). Hope this helps.

SONY LIB-81 Error on LCD screen - Drive Information 51

I think this sounds like the drive is having a issue loading and moving the tape in slot 1.
AIT units are known for having this kind of problem.
Try a cleaning tape and then a new tape fresh out the wrapper for a test backup.

if it fails with a known good tape then its time to send it out for repair
