You may need to adjust your contrast. After turning the calculator on, press the 2nd button and then hold down the down arrow. This will lighten the screen if the contrast is the problem.

If this doesn't work, you might try resetting your calculator. Take out the backup battery that is located behind a little door with a screw right above the 4 AAA batteries. Leave all batteries out for about 8 hours and then reassemble. Hopefully when you turn it on, this will work. Good luck

Try to reset everything to see if that helps. If it doesn't , you can try to upgrade your operating system on the calculator to see if that helps to make it go away.
If that doesn't help try this:
"Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the [CLEAR] key. While holding [CLEAR], reinsert the AAA battery and then turn the calculator on. The calculator should display the message "RAM Cleared". Release the [CLEAR] key and then press it one more time to remove the message."
Let me know how it goes.

This is from TI FAQS:

Solution 11900: Troubleshooting a TI Graphing Calculator That Will Not Turn On.

  3. Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the [CLEAR] key. While holding [CLEAR], reinsert the AAA battery and then turn the calculator on. The calculator should display the message "RAM Cleared". Release the [CLEAR] key and then press it one more time to remove the message.

My Ti83 silver edition will not turn on.

I'm not sure if this will help you patchesb7; it sounds like your calculator is having issues :(
This will help others whose calculators suddenly won't turn on anymore, even after changing the batteries.

Note:
This will return the calculator to the way it was when you got it out of the package. Any data or programs have stored since will be lost.

Step 1: Remove all four AAA batteries.

Note: You will have to hold down the CLEAR button while doing Steps 2 and 3. Do not let go until after you have pushed ON in Step 3. I found this easiest to do by holding the calculator upside in my left hand with my pointer finger holding the CLEAR button so the ON button was easier to access.

Step 2: Hold down the CLEAR button (located under the arrow keys) and reinstall the AAA batteries.

Step 3: Press ON button and then let go of both buttons. The screen should say the RAM has been cleared. Press CLEAR to continue.

Batteries drains quickly

I had something similar, it kept saying "battery low" after putting in new batteries. Try the Clear method; Take out one battery, hold the Clear button, while holding it insert the battery again and press on, and release. Now press clear again, turn it off and turn it back on again. If that doesn't help... well it must be something else... sorry :S
