When you put he bobbin in the holder make sure that the thread is coming out the right way , slide it down the slot and under the spring and leave about a foot of thread out
for beginners it is advisable to join a local sewing club as practical experience is a fast way to learn

Hello, Linda -

Is your sewing machine a Janome Magnolia 7318? If so . . .

This YouTube video demonstrates how to thread that model of machine, including how to pull up the bobbin thread:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUsT0plWt6Y

The part of the demonstration with pulling up the bobbin thread starts at about 5:00.

Written instructions, with drawings, start on Page 10 of the owner's manual for the Janome Magnolia 7318. If you do not have the manual, you can find it here to download and save it (to print later):
http://janome.com/siteassets/support/manuals/economy-models/inst-book-7318-english.pdf
Note: You will need Adobe Reader software (free). Plus, if you save the PDF document, be sure to give it a file name you can find easily - something like: Janome Magnolia 7318.

The section in the PDF version of the manual about pulling up the bobbin thread starts on Image 12.

Best wishes.

Under the embroidery attachement (on the front side) is a lever to engage or disengage the "feed dog control." When embroidering, you need to move the lever to the level to disengage. The feed dog control should only be at the righe side position, or raised when you are not using the embroidery attatchment.

SOURCE: my thread gets stuck down in the bobbin area.

Ensure that you are threaded correctly, set your tension for roughly 4.5 and "floss" your machine when threading by grabbing the thread by the needle immediately prior to threading the needle with your left hand, and the thread on the top by the spool with your right hand; then pull the thread back and forth briefly.
Ensure that your bobbin is in the bobbin case in the correct orientation.
Ensure that your feed dogs are in the "up" position. Many inexpensive machines do not have the option to drop the feed dogs, and I believe your kenmore to be one that lacks the option, but consult your manual just to be sure.
Also make sure you're using a good quality thread. Use a European thread, and definitely avoid anything from the dollar bin or any kind of "dual duty" type thread. Cheap thread causes nasty nasty things to happen to sewing machines.

If none of these fixes solves your problem, let me know; but going through the above will solve 99% of problems like you're describing.

Good luck,

-R

SOURCE: viking husqvarna classica 100, thread tension

I suspect you are correctly threading the machine but the timing of the needle and bobbin hook is off. When the threaded needle goes into the bobbin area, a pointed hook grabs the thread and loops it with the bobbin thread. Something is catching when the needle starts to come up that is not allowing the bobbin thread to be pulled back through the needle plate opening by the upper thread. With machine threaded and bobbin in place, have the bobbin area open if possible and watch the thread interaction when the needle goes down. To set the hook/needle timing, normally covers have to be removed. Suggest taking it to an authorized Husqvarna Viking dealer for service. You can find the nearest dealer by click on the "Dealer" link at http://www.husqvarnaviking.com
Good luck.

SOURCE: My brother LS-1520 sewing machine is having major tension problem

Try some metal bobbins, #15 or SA 156. that seems to help. If, you don't have a manual go to brother.com and download one for free

Yes, the hook timing is off. You need to either take it to a service repair center, or do the timing yourself. If you're mechanically inclined, go to youtube and look for a video by Nilsandkatrina about how to repair your sewing machine. He gives a very good example.

I have a Janome magnolia 7318. when I lower feed dogs to quilt it will not sew circles or feathers well. It pulls bobbin thread up on top in loops.

I've found that when FMQing, I usually need to increase the bobbin tension to keep the bobbin thread down (for this reason, I have a separate bobbin case that has the tension adjusted that is used only for FMQ). You may even need to decrease the top tension if the top thread is "pulling" the bobbin thread up.

What settings should I be using to use to make a straight stitch

Try setting the stitch length to 10-12 stitches per inch. Start with the top tension set at the mid-point between the highest and lowest number. Higher number usually means a tighter tension, lower number is looser.
Make sure you have installed the needle properly (the flat part of the needle should be placed facing the direction stated in your manual).

Be sure to raise the presser foot BEFORE you thread the machine (releases the tension disk). Check that you have threaded everything in the proper order and that you haven't missed any. (Consult your manual for specific instructions.)

Make sure your bobbin is installed correctly and turning in the direction indicated in your manual (some machine bobbins turn clockwise, others turn counterclockwise). Check that the bobbin thread has been pulled through the tension guide on the bobbin case.

After you have confirmed everything is threaded properly, then you can test sew. Turn the upper tension control slightly to either tighten or loosen according to your machine's needs. When the needle and bobbin threads meet in the middle of the fabric, your tension should be where it needs to be. BUT, remember that for every project, you may need to make slight adjustments as the tension for sewing denim fabric most likely will not be appropriate for sewing silk.

Where do i fix the tension at? i understand there is a top and bottom but i just dont understand. The thread keeps getting bunched up. It sews good for a bit then it just bunches up and i dont know what...

why dont you visit this website and read up some of the general info on sewing machines, should help you get started.

http://sewing.about.com/od/sewingmachineindex/bb/sewingmachines.htm

Usually you should only need to adjust the top tension a little bit for different fabrics but generally it should be fine on 5. Bottom tension is set by a little screw on the bobbin case (if yours is a removable front loading type) or sometimes a little dial if fixed horizontal bobbin case design. If machine has been set up correctly from new then bottom tension should not need to be touched at all.

It sounds more like your machine is not threaded properly, causing the thread bunching up to occur. If you don't have a manual you may find a threading diagram at www.sewusa.com or www.singerco.com, the Singer website has instruction manuals for download free for many models.

It sounds like you may be a beginner sewer, in which case, I highly recommend taking a few classes to learn how to best utilise your machine and save lots of frustration too.

I got this machine for xmas. I am using it for the first time. I have followed the manuel on how to thread bobbin & machine (Brother(CE5000). I have spent all day trying to get it to work and I am...

when starting to sew
1.make sure to have a thread tail of 3 to 6 inches on top thread & bobbin
this will keep the thread from pulling out of the needle when starting
2. make sure the thread tail is pulled behind the needle area before starting to sew

I have rewound a bobbin on my sewpro sewing machine. When I loaded the bobbin back in the machine I can't get the machine to pick up the thread to sew again.

Welcome to FixYa. I always try the easiest fixes first - make sure your bobbin is inserted correctly, and that the bobbin thread is securely threaded in the bobbin case (sometimes the bobbin thread doesn't "catch" when you place it in the bobbin case). If all is well in the bobbin area, rethread your machine. Make sure that the presser foot is in the raised position when you thread. If it still isn't sewing correctly, change your needle. These last three steps fix most problems. But, if you are still having problems, look at the thread in the problem bobbin. It should be straight and tight. If it is kind of wobbly and a little loose, you'll need to wind the thread onto a new bobbin.

If are new to sewing, keep your manual close by and refer to it often. Simple mistakes can make a new sewer loose confidence, but it is all part of the process of learning your machine.

Good luck and happy sewing. If you have a sec, please rate my response so I know when I need to work on my responses.

Thanks for stopping in. Ginny
