OK, are you certain that the shipping bolts were removed when the washer was delivered and installed? I've had folks that complained after 3-4 years that they're front loading washer was now making all sorts of strange noises when their kids came home from college and really stuffed the washer with clothes, etc.

Check the installation and owners manual for the diagram that shows the shipping bolts that should have been removed from the rear of the washer when it was installed in your home. There are usually 2-4 of these, depending on the brand/model of washer.

If the shipping bolts have been removed (all of them!) then you can pull the washer out from the wall and see if there is something that might be hitting the drive belt/motor underneath the washer. It's possible that a tub suspension spring(s) and/or pulley(s) may have come off their mount causing the noise.

Another thing to look at is to see if the pulley on the motor shaft has come loose and might be causing the noise, as it might have worked loose but still catches on the keyway in the shaft enough to still function.

I usually pull the unit away from the wall with the hoses hooked up so I can remove the rear cover and watch everything while I run the unit through a short wash cycle. That is a quick and easy way to see what might be causing the noise. From there, you can start to focus in on different areas to verify or eliminate them as the noise source. Of course, it goes without saying, be very careful not to get your hands caught while the machine is running and unplug it before you reach in and start feeling around the unit.

Grinding noise before spin cycle

Good Morning John,

I see that you are hearing a grinding noise before the spin cycle in your Frigidaire washer, model# GLET1031CS0. A certain amount of "grinding" or gear sounds are normal in a heavy-duty washer. If you notice that the grinding sound appears to be getting louder, I suggest contacting either the manufacturer or your local authorized technician for further assistance. Hope this is helpful.

-Best Regards-

When washer is started make loud grinding noise

Very likely the bearings in the motor have begun to fail. You can replace the motor, but for a 15 year old DW, sometimes it makes better sense to just buy a new one. Depends on the features the old DW has, vs new, vs motor replacement cost.

Reply back and we can you more.

Weird rubbing or mild grinding noise when in spin cycle.

It sounds like the bearings on your tub are going. This is an expensive and difficult job to do. (approx $450 parts and labour and you may do more damage trying to take it apart)

Grinding Noise when Washer Attempts to Spin

It is probably the same problem because it is trying to drain during the spin cycle. My machine sounded as though a chain wis clanking, the solution was removing a coin caught in the drain pump. Access the pump from the bottom of the machine. 4 screws hold the mounting bracket on undo those, the electrical connection and two hose to the pump. Undo three screws holding impeller to motor and coin can fall out. Examine for damage if it is not too tore up, put back together. Keep in mind that when you unclamp the hoses that water will come out.

Whirlpool Duet Washer Making Loud Grinding Noise

not nesseccarrily your pump, possible you have a rear bearing going bad, which will sound as if a helicopter is coming through your laundry room. ( noisy pump can be the issue , honestly a better and cheapre problem to have) in order to determine if its apump problem you can remove the lower access panel and unplug the pump then start the spinn cycle, if it still loud the pumpms not hte issue.

Whirlpool washer Mod# TWAS750PQO, Ser# CR3520005

is it possible that the washer was overloaded? if so the agitator has little plastic "gears" that move the agitator one way only, they could have made the sound.
you can also check under the washer to see if anything (like a coat-hanger or something) is interfering with moving parts of the washer

Grinding niose from agitator.

If the fill and drain functions correctly, AND the spin cycle works correctly, AND the cycle itself starts and completes correctly, the problem being that the back and forth motion of the agitator starts the loud grinding noise, it will likley be broken gears in the transmission. The single most expensive part in the washing machine.
