LAPTOP does not turn on. only fan runs.

Things to check first.
1. Make sure you have a new BIOS battery installed. Some computers will not start if the battery for the BIOS is dead.

2. The CPU may have overheated and no longer works. I lost a CPU and everything was dead.

3. A dead motherboard can also act in like manner.

Sometimes something will come loose on the motherboard causing a direct short which of course fries the motherboard and probably the CPU. Dropping a laptop can shake things loose.

My Daughter had this happen with hers. It was a 800 dollar HP Compaq and I had a heatsink come loose on my HP Compaq which fried CPU AND Motherboard. Beware of HP since they bought Compaq.

Puter will not start

More than likely, a memory chip that is not seated properly. Open the computer case and look at the motherboard. Memory chip slot banks are usually about 2 to 3 inches long, with white clips on each end of the individual slots. Check for a loose one. They must be seated VERY firmly so that the white clips lock down.

Bad motherboard or power supply which fries motherboard

Gateway hasn't had any recalls on it that I know of. maybe it is not the mother board. It might be the hard drive. Hard drives can do that aswell. When I fix a computer the first thing I check is the hard drive. A little bit of advice with computers. Start with the small things first and work Your way up to the big stuff. Hope that helps.

Fri the motherboard

In most cases, no, that won't fry the motherboard. It might not boot, but shouldn't fry it. If you're getting no response from the board at boot, make sure you have the CPU fully seated in its' slot. Make sure those front panel wires are in the right place, too - especially the power switch and reset switch. Give it a shot, and see if the board is getting power - are any of the fans running? The thing is, make sure you have that power switch connector on the right jumper, and turned the right way (positive where it should be).

If you have any further information, I could make a better guess, but for now... good luck.

Cheers
