Try to reduce sensitivity of your mic if you can or simply reduce lever of recording which at the same time should reduce sensitivity. ..or get yourself one of cheap logitech mics and record through them
hope this helps

What do you do if the built in microphone for the Toshiba Satellite M305D-S4840 is not working (not picking up sound)?

SKYPE MICROPHONE PROBLEM
If the person cannot hear you then, either your microphonedriver not installed or not working OR the microphone is not configured inSkype.
To test your microphone then click on Start - All Programs - Accessories -Entertainment - Sound recorder. Then record your voice and then play it back.If this is OK then the microphone need to be configured in Skype.
To configure the microphone - Open Skype - Tools - Options -Audio Settings for the Microphone THEN click on Save.

There is a horrible echo whenever i try to record and then there's a loud noice that sounds like a very high-pitched whistle and i don't know what to do.

This type of audio feedback loop can happen on any mic if you are playing back audio at a loud volume on speakers that are close to the mic while the mic is on - which tends to happen on Skype calls. Try lowering your speaker volume or using headphones to hear the audio, then speak into mic, and the feedback should be reduced.

It Says that there is a built in mic but the people i chat with can't hear me. i don't think it's properly set-up. how do i set it up for skype and ym?

Make sure you have correctly installed the drivers for the microphone.
Running Skype, navigate to Skype-->Preferences--->Audio/Video from here you will able to select the device of your choice by changing the mic
Running Yahoo Messenger, navigate to YM-->Preferences-->Voice & Calls from here you will able to select the input device by choosing your mic These steps reference Mac, but PC should be similar.

I have a Toshiba Satellite P205d-S7438 laptop. I am trying to determine if I have an internal microphone. On the front of the computer, there are connections for a microphone and headset.

sorry, accourding to the laptop specs found here
you do have built in speakers but no mic!
you need to get mic and headphones or a headset to say chat with sound through your mic using msn messenger or skype.

I know is not the answer expected, my apologies!

You do not say what your audio setup is - if you have a laptop you are using the built in speakers or a desk top with add-on speakers. Also you do not say what your OS is

Here is Vista x laptop x Yahoo Messenger
TEST SPEAKERS
Right click on speaker icon in System Tray
Select "Playback Devices"
The speaker icon (checked as working) and volume level graph should be visible
Right click on the volume graph and click "Test"
Left hand speakers followed by right hand should be heard
Click on Speaker icon to highlight, click 'Properties' ramp up sliders - test again

SET DEFAULT & TEST MIC
Click "Recording" tab.
Set required mic as default - click on mic font to highlight and click "Properties"
In lower dropbox display "Use this device enable" click OK
Click "Levels" tab and set slider to 100% (adjust to suit later)
Return to "Recording". Test mic by speaking and make sure volume graph displays
Restart computer

CONFIGURE TO MESSENGER
Open messenger - on top toolbar. Left click ( > ) Messenger > Preferences > Connection - Select 'no proxies' or 'connect direct to the internet' depending on the version of messenger you have
make sure your internet connection and country are correct in the lower two boxes > Apply > OK

Click ( > ) Messenger > Preferences > Calling and Audio
Set mic and speakers to show Default equipment
Run call up assistant to test audio equipment > Apply > OK

If you do not have Vista - you will have to access your audio equipment via the Control Panel
