Sounds like a piece of the needle is stuck in your bobbin case. Take it apart and brush it out. I mean remove your bobbin and the case, use a new paint brush if you do not have a brush with your sewing machine. Let me know if that made a difference, if not, we can try something else.

SOURCE: breaks needle

Yes they can indeed go out of time and breaking needles is the most likely cause. To solve timing problems you will need a sewing machine engineer though. The part which needs adjusting would be the area above the needle-the needlebar but it is a fiddly affair only to be attembed by someone who can repair sewing machines. It is also a fairly expensive repair as it is very time consuming. However-don't assume it is that. Firstly make sure the new needle is in correctly-the most common cause of problems is needles in wrong direction! If bobbin opens at front then the flat part of the needle faces the back. If bobbin area opens at side then the flat side of needle faces the body of the machine to the right. Check needleplate for damage so that new needle does not catch. File it smooth if you need to! Check you are using a good quality thread as cheap thread causes no end of problems. Guuterman is the best I found.

Why does the needle always stop down in the fabric?

I just took a look at your user's manual (I recommend you go to the Singer site and download it--it's free), and on page 20, it says that the top button of the set of three buttons above the needle shaft is the needle up/down button. If you press it when the machine is NOT sewing, it will reset it to stopping with the needle UP instead of DOWN. In other words, it resets the needle's default position, but you must do that when it isn't sewing anything.

Frequent thread breaking

Hai, Please check the thread tension and change the new thread and new needle. Otherwise put the some drops oil in the top and bobbin thread. Or go to mechanic shop.

On my Singer 8280, the thread stitches are very loose. I've tried adjusting the tension of the upper and below thread. No change, still loose stitches. Any ideas? I wonder if I broke and...

The most common cause of this is improper threading.

1. Thread the upper thread properly with the presser foot in the UP position.

2. Make sure the bobbin is threading with the thread unspooling in the correct direction.

3. Make sure the needle and thread are suitable for the fabric in your project.

I have had a singer prelude 8280 for a year now with no problems. now all the sudden the thread is catching in the bobbin casing. The thread on top looks normal, but when you turn over the fabric...

It is in your top threading, try this test, rethread, now with the presser foot up, pull the top thread, it should feed smoothly, now lower the presser foot, it should barely move. Sometimes this seats the thread in the tension discs. Also, make sure that your needle is fresh.

Thread mess at the underside of the fabric

Hi, maybe your bobbin is turning the wrong way and you need to flip it over. Or you don't have any top tension. Be sure the thread is in between the tension disks with the foot up. Its also possible that there is a burr on the hook part that goes around and grabs the top thread. The thread will catch on the burr and cause this issue. Usually after breaking a needle. Then the burr would need to be polished off.

Singer 8280 bent needle, now machine wont work

Depends what it would cost for service. Most standard service would cost at least $50-100. You can purchase a replacement machine for ~$100.

New singer 8280 needle hits overcasting foot and breaks

so, it sews for a while?  It sounds to me like the screw that holds the needle in place is loose.  As the needle moves up and down the screw loosens until that one fateful stitch, it comes out completely.  Try to tighten with a screw driver.
the other possibility is that it breaks if you are sewing over a bulky seam, like a flat fell.  as the presser foot "toes up" to go over the lump, the needle hits and there you are.
holler if that doesn't help.
