The car is a 6cyl. The entire engine was replaced for lifters clacking about 1 1/2 yrs back. It still sounds like a sewing machine. Rarely do they not make noise.I'm 57 yr old female and drive easy. No hot roding from me. Very frustrated!

If this engine has hydraulic lifters and no lash adjustment available, you may have one or more cracks in the lifter bores causing the lifter to bleed down and take longer to pressurize back up.If not leaking oil, it has to be burning it. Possibly through worn valve guides/seals in the cylinder head.
If one was damaged from lack of lubrication, they probably all are excessively worn. The engine will perform better if they are all the same, so it's best to replace the entire set to keep it running smoothly. It isn't really that much extra work once you have access to the lifters compared to trying to figure out which ones are noisy. The only reason not to do this is if you are time-rich and cash-poor, and only have enough money to change a couple of lifters. If you are paying somebody to do it, new lifters are probably cheaper than the labor of sorting bad from good.
You should also check the rocker arms to make sure they are still in usable condition; excess wear at the pivot can get noisy also.
transmission has to be removed to in stall a new throw out bearing but sounds like the clutch is not releasing if grinding to shift is pedal solid or spongy
Sounds like your valve lifters. It's possible that they drained the oil and never refilled it. This does happen when they go on break or lunch half way through a job. They think they added the oil, but did not. Out you go, Mr. Clack-Clack.
You should perform an oil pressure test and see if the engine is producing oil pressure within specification. If it is, the lifters may quiet down over time.
I suspect you have hydraulic lifters and the sludgy oil could plug up your lifters - as well as running that low on oil. Top off your oil and get an oil additive engine cleaner, warm your engine at idle only then change oil when warm. Add 1 quart of marvel mystery oil to the crankcase then top off with high mileage oil, like Valvoline. Run motor at idle only and see if this cures the problem - if not then you may need to remove the intake and replace your lifters, a costly and time consuming job. I would not try driving as you may waste the cylinder head or block by running a stuck lifter. There is also an oil additive specifically for stuck lifter and I think I would add that as well as the Marvel. I hope the quick fix works for you and good luck!!!
Sounds like an oil pressure problem. The clacking sound is most likely the lifters are collapsing due to loss of oil pressure. You may have a failing oil pump.
Hi,
1. Is your oil level ok?
2. Is the noise coming from the top of the engine area? If it is, you may have excessive clearance on a valve lifter. If this is the case, you could have a hydraulic lifter stuck.
Hope this helps... Good luck!
