HP just did a recall on most of their laptops, yours should fall under what they call "extended service enhancement" or something to that effect. I just sent mine in for a problem with the motherboard not charging the battery.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01087277&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3439691

My situation was a little unique though, I had an extra battery and charger I could test, plus another computer I could swap the battery out with. If you dont have these resources, you will have to convince them that it is one of the things listed on the link I just gave you and that it is a defect and not from neglegence.

Aside from that, there are a few things you can try just to be sure that it is really a fried motherboard and not just some dumb little problem. Ive been told that removing the battery sometimes solves the problem, I have never had this help me before though, I suppose it is worth a try.

Make sure you are holding the power button down for at least 1 full second before releasing, I dont know why, but simply hitting the button quickly wont turn it on.

Remove each component one by one, for example, remove the hard drive, then try to turn it on, then remove the RAM and see if it gives you an error instead of just simply shutting off.

Make sure your power adapter is working. Two lights should be turning on, one in the front, and the ring around the plug.

Make sure its not a problem with the power jack inside the laptop. Really the only way to do this is to pull it apart and either physically check it or to replace it with a new one, this should be a last restort.

If you need to order a new motherboard, buy from someone on ebay with a huge postitive feed back. You dont want to mess around with unreputable people on ebay when you are spending upwards of $100.

Here is an example of a good seller:

http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-Pavilion-DV9000-DV9500-Intel-motherboard-434659-001_W0QQitemZ250369812650QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3a4b3428aa&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

I dont know exactly what kind of motherboard you have, I looked at the manual

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01311536.pdf

and it lists several different motherboards for the particular model you have, make sure you get the right one.

You will also need someone to replace the motherboard, or do it yourself, good luck with that. Sometimes you can find some decent repair people on craigs list, just make sure they give you plenty of ways to contact them and be sure that you will be able to find them if they dont return your call.

You could also try Staples, they will repair your computer for $350 no questions asked.

Some of their Easytech people are trained to do motherboard replacements, this would probably cost you about $250 if they did it, but having someone trained to do it in a store is quite rare. Plus they get paid hourly so that particular person would have to be willing to take the time to do the repair.

I am not sure about geek squad, I have never done business with them beucase of the horrible feedback most people give them. I am not sure if it is desereved or not, I suppose it depends on who works at the each store.

Well anyways, good luck.

The RAM may not be working.
Try removing the RAM module/s and and cleaning the gold contacts with methylated spirits then replace the RAM module/s. If the computer still does not boot, then remove the RAM module/s and take them to your friendly computer repair shop and get them to test your RAM.

Will not power up. Replaced bad power supply(burned circuit board inside PSU) but still does not power up, PSU is ok. When power on button is pushed CPU fan turns for about 1/2 second but nothing else....

Sounds to me like when the power supply went out it allowed a surge to hit the mother board and you will have to replace it also .Look at the mother board and see if there is a green LED light showing if it is you are getting power to it and you have capacitors blown if not recheck you connections from the power supply and MB if they are all tight and correct then just figure on replacing the mother board

I'm sure this is a problem for most. HP Pavilion dv9205us starts up, fan engages, Led's light up, drive attempts small start, but stops and after 15 to 20 seconds shuts down with a 1 second flash...

Hello.

Could be a power issue.

The most common reasons for power issues are the battery, power jack and power adapter/cord.

Power off and remove the battery. If the laptop powers on with just the adapter connected, your battery is faulty.

If you move/wiggle the power adapter at the point where it connects to the laptop, and the power goes off and on, the power jack is the problem.

The power jack is inside the laptop and either needs soldering or replacement. If a power jack problem, it should be addressed by someone knowledgeable.

If no change, the power adapter is probably faulty and needs replacement.

Hope this helps.

Hp blue light on ac plug is on, when power button is pushed lights come on for a second then nothing, tried removing battery and pressing power button for 40 seconds, no response. Is the mother board bad?

Im afraid that is a motherboard failure. A few months ago I had one in for repair with the same symptoms. Tried reflowing the graphic chip, nothing Tried reflowing the FSB controller chip, nothing. Tested power module for bad capacitors, nothing.
You could do the same steps I did, maybe you get lucky.

MY HP WONT START UP....... after pressing start button, the LED lit up and then nothing happens...I tried all the possilbe ways available on the internet........nothing worked...Can't get inot its Bois,...

Ok, this doesn't work on every HP, nut it does for alot of them.

1: remove power cord and battery, so that there is no electricity to the laptop

2: hold power button for 16-20 seconds...this is a master reset mode for the bios...sometimes HP bios freezes up

3: replace battery, then power cord in that order before attempting to boot up

4: Try to reboot your system. Like I said, this doesn't work for every HP, but it does work on alot of them.

This is because HP system boards sometimes freeze, and the procedure I am telling you about is the "unfreeze system"

Laptop wont wake from sleep or hibernation

1. you will need to go into you BIOS settings for the mother board to disable the sleep mode.
2. You also have a " sleep mode" in your Windows environment.
Check how to in the "help and support" link at the start button or Windows Orb ( for Windows 7)

Compaq Presario CQ50-139WM will not boot.

first thing i would try is to unplug the powercord from the surge proetctor and from the computer. turn the computer over and take out the battery.

with the battery out, press on the power button for 30 seconds.

now put the battery back in and plug in the computer and try booting it.

sometimes static electricity builds up inside the computer and this will dissipate it.

MY HP NOTEBOOK MODEL: DV9205US REBOOT FOR ONLY 5 SEC

Had the same problems with my dv9205us in Feb 2008. Called HP and gave them the model and serial #s. There is a recall on certain models due to motherboard issues. The Fed-Exed a box with a return shipping label. Had the notebook back within a week at most with no cost to me at all. Give HP a call to see if you fall under the recall.
