Mostly of the sound driver now are need a compatibility if your installed driver is not compatible it will affect the hardware. It's better that you will know the model of your motherboard, if you know the model you need to search the model and download the sound driver witch is compatible.
For now the all motherboard are High Definition Audio.

Good luck!

Have an IBM A31 Thinkpad. Purchased used. Have Windows/Systems32/Config/ System missing or corrupt message. I do not have the original System Set CD-ROM. I have no work on the computer that I need

The hardware specs for this machine will not handle anything later than Windows XP. I would recommend doing a clean installation of XP or even might try a free operating system like Ubuntu ( Just have to download the iso and get it burned to a disc. All in all, I would recommend a machine with better specs to provide an all around better working computer. Hope this helps.

You must not have all of your drivers installed. I have found the drivers for you, however, on the website.

How difficult or advisable is it to try to upgrade an existing Dell laptop? I have one that is probably 5 years old...would like to wipe it clean.

I dont think you can upgrade this particular mode.. Its better if you can get a new computer.. If you need to wipe out everything then you need to reinstall everything like OS and drivers which may take long time.. S0 try this..
Dell has a default partition on the computer and you can install with the same..
If you have windows vista on the computer then tap F8 when the computer turns on and then you will be able to see the advanced boot options.. Select repair my computer.. In the repair my computer screen select the dell factory image restore...
Your computer will go through the installation and it will be up and running...
If you have windows Xp then you have to turn on the computer and when the dell logo appears you have to simultaneously press control and the F11key.. You will be able to reinstall the OS and drivers in this way..

If thi is not available then install OS using the OS disk and then drivers using the drivers disk...

I have an Dell Dimension E510 running windows XP. I have 5.1 surround sound speakers that were working fine until recently. Only 2 speakers work; left and right. None of the others have sound. I have...

Reinstall the software for the sound system, this should redetect the speakers properly as 5.1 surround sound speakers.

If you do this and it still doesn't work then the speakers are bad and your sound system would need to be replaced.

Clean XP Pro installed -- now NIC disappeared!

Well once you did a clean install over all of Dell drivers etc etc. You wiped out the restore artion that was on the computer. You have to go to Dells website and under the support tab look for the Nic card that you have inside the computer.

Reinstalling speakers

Most often, a recovery CD is provided with Dell PCs. This would contain all the necessary drivers. If it is still available, you need to pop it in the CD tray and look for a folder that says multimedia, sound, audio or something like that.

In the absence of the CD, downloadable drivers for a Dell Dimension 3100 running XP Home Edition SP2 would be here. You need to fill in the details.

Hope this be of help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you be in need of additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
