I had to delete all data and format the whole system to perform the update. The 4th generation iPad and earlier versions cannot be updated to the current iOS version. If there is no software update function on the iDevice, then you are trying to perform an update to iOS 5 or higher. You will need to connect your device to your computer and open iTunes to update. I did so after which I had to do raid data recovery. But it worked in the end and the system is pulling the updates pretty well. No glitches.
