Question about Craftsman 17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model
Won't start. Has compression. backfiring through muffler and occasionally thru carb. I think gas is coming out the muffler . Changed spark plug. Any ideas?
On many riding mowers there are two wires that at the bottom of the carb bowl, these wires go to a solenoid which closes a valve so gas will shut-off when the start key is turned off. When this solenoid is bad it will not close which let gas keep going to the carb so the eng will bang through the carb or muffer. Hope that this will Help. Hugh Lyon

Take out spark plug, if is black and oily then you have too much choke [gas and air and oil] .check choke cable and spring[it might be stuck] clean plug with sandpaper. heat metal part of plug somehow[not too hot!] .replace, start and quickly adjust carb.until idling speed.
