Won't start when cover closed

your lid safety switch is shot, you need to remove 2 side control panel covers that pop off, then remove 2 screws that are under here, then control panel will separate from top to let you unplug lid switch connection to the control panel, then open the top cover by popping clips inward on the 2 front corners with a putty knife or something flat like this between the top and front covers, then raise top up and lean back against the wall there you can access this switch to replace it,this switch is designed to shut off unit if lid is raised during spin cycle for your safety

LS error

The machine control detected that the lid switch is not functioning properly. Raise the top part of the washer to gain access to the lid switch.

Disconnect the machine from the power source. Gently pry the emblem from the front of the machine and remove the T20 torx screw hidden behind it. Slide the top of the washer forward and raise its front. Prop it up high enough to allow easy access to the lid switch.

The lid switch is activated by an actuator (part number 19119) mounted on a hinge. It will not work properly if the actuator is damaged.

Check the operation of the lid switch using a multimeter. Disconnect the lid switch wiring harness and connect the test leads of the multimeter (set to X1 or ohm) to the terminals of the lid switch and activate it. The multimeter should read zero ohms while the lid switch is activated and open when deactivated.

Replace the lid switch if it is broken or if it fails the test above. Remove the lid switch mounting screw and install the new lid switch. Reconnect the wiring harness and slide the top of the washer back into position. Reinstall the T20 torx screw and the emblem.

Ho do you access lid switch

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

To get to the lid switch on a Kenmore Top Load, you have to remove the cabinet.

See GURU JSROCK516 Description of how to remove cabinet and access the transmission. http://www.fixya.com/support/r699497-replacing_gearcase

Basically, you will remove two covers if your model has them, two screws, unolug the lid switch from the console and pull the cabinet forward.

Washing machine will not drain or spin.

HELLO: YES THE LID SWITCH IS BAD. TO REPLACE THE LID SWITCH YOU MUST REMOVE THE COVER ON THE MACHINE. FIRST REMOVE THE TWO PHILLIPS SCREWS FROM THE CONTROL CENTER ON TOP BACK OF MACHINE . TILT BACK THE TIMER AND CONTROL CENTER GENTLY. THERE ARE TWO FUNNY LOOKING LID RETAINER SPRINGS THAT HOLD THE ENTIRE THREE SIDES OF THE MACHINE TOGETHER REMOVE THESE WITH A FLAT BLADE SCREW DRIVER. REMOVE THE POWER PLUG FROM THE WASHER UNDER TOP. SLIDE COVER OFF MACHINE THEN REMOVE THE TWO PHILLLIPS SCREWS FROM THE LID SWITCH ASSY. UNPLUG SWITCH FROM COVER AND REPLACE WITH NEW UNIT . THERE IS ALSO ONE GROUND SCREW 5/16 THAT WILL COME OFF FROM UNDER NEATH THE COVER. THIS SOUNDS A LITTLE COMPLICATED BUT THE WHOLE PROCEDURE CAN BE DONE IN LESS THAN 10 MINUTES. Door switch is probably bad or connection is loose. Remove the top cover to gain access to the switch.

The whole top assymbly has to be lifted off. Sometimes, you can gain access to the switch from the rear panel without removing the top. I just replaced one for my mother last November. I was able to get to it without removeing the top cover. Some are just not easy.

Removing top cover to access switch

You have to pretty much use a putty knife to remove the front panel. Insert the putty knife into the edge of the front panel where it meets the top lid panel about and inch or two from the sides. One clip on each side. Push in the putty knife and give a little pull on the front panel repeat step for other side. That should get you into where you need to be.

Hope this helps you out. Feel free to ask any more questions about this if you run into anymore issues.
