Cant get tv to work using direct tv remote (by 2 users)

i have a new 32 inch ilo hd tv trying to get tv to work using direct tv remote but nothing happens tryed the pressing the 991 method but still nothing any help in this matter would be appreciated

i have the same problem as the guy on this forum on my hannspree jt02 37". the code menu 991 dose not work in any way. can someone please help me find out how to get to the setup menu and turn down the brightness as it hurts my eyes and would have to take it back if i cant get it to change : (
