Sounds like the keyboard has gone.

You can try removing it (usually removing the section above the keyboard, unscrewing and removing) and replacing it (the ribbon/cable may not be seated correctly).

If not, contact Dell and buy a new keyboard to replace it with (they are usually only about £20).

i found this very good guide: 1. If your operating system is XP, CTRL and F11 key simultaneously when you see the dell logo after turning on the Laptop and follow the screen instructions.

* Power the computer on.
* When the Dell screen appears press and hold the CTRL and F11 key simultaneously on the keyboard, then release them both at the same time.
The Dell PC Restore by Symantec window appears.
* Click the Restore button or press the key to highlight Restore and press the key.
A caution message appears advising that all data will be lost.
* Click the Confirm button or press the key to highlight Confirm and press the key.
The Progress window appears. Once the process is begun, Dell PC Restore usually takes only 8 to 10 minutes to complete.
When the restore is complete, the message The system recovery process was successful appears.
* Click the Finish button or press the key to highlight Finish and press the key.
The computer will restart.

2. If your operating system is VISTA / Win 7, tap F8 key when you see the dell logo. It will take you to advanced boot menu options under which you will see Repair your Computer, Select that option and enter your password if it asked, then you will be seeing list of options like system restore, command promt, etc., In that the last option says Dell PC restore or some thing like that. Select that option and follow the screens .. Thats it.

* Start the computer.
* As the computer starts, press the F8 key until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears on the screen.
* Press the (Down Arrow) to select Repair Your Computer on the Advanced Boot Options menu, and then press Enter.

* Click to select the check box for Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition.
* Click Next. The computer is restored to the default factory configuration.
* When the restore operation is completed, click Finish to restart the computer.

3. If in both case, the Factory default didn't work, then your laptop's factory image defaults partition have vanished (i.e. Corrupted / Deleted). So you have to do Operating System re installation with the Operating System CD / DVD shipped along with laptop. Follow the below link to install windows XP Pro on your own.

None of the keys work to get into bios setup so that i can change the boot order. i need to reinstall windows xp pro because of the error code 0x07e bsod

As SOON as you press the power on button, start tapping on the F12 key.
When the Boot Device list appears, use the Up, or DOWN arrow key to highlight CDROM.

(The option goes by very F-A-S-T.
It's easy to go right by it. Don't wait until you see the Dell logo splash screen)

Press the Enter key.
Put the Restoration Disk, or Windows XP full installation disk in the optical drive.
Press any key to Boot from CDROM.

Got Dell Inspiron 2650 2002 from a friend, free. Want to restore to factory settings. How? Installed Windows XP and Norton Anti Virus

Hi and welcome to fixya!

There are two ways to restore this machine to factory settings;

First is thru the Recovdery partition in the hard disk itself:

  • 1 Close any windows currently open and click the Inspiron's "Start" button. Select "Shut Down" and choose the "Restart" option.
  • 2 Tap "F8" when the Dell image appears on the screen. Continue tapping the key until the advanced boot menu loads.
  • 3 Scroll down to "Repair Your Computer" and press "Enter" to access the DataSafe local backup screen. Click "Next." Select "Dell Factory Image Recovery and DataSafe options."
  • 4 Click the "Restore without preserving new or changed files" radio button and click "Next." Click "Next" three more times and click "Restart" to restore the disk drive to its original condition. Follow the on-screen prompts to set your operating system settings.

If the hdd was already repartitioned or corrupted, the second option should work:

  • 1 Insert the Dell recovery disk in your Inspiron's optical drive and close the "AutoPlay" window when it appears. Shut down any other open programs. Click "Start" and select "Restart."
  • 2 Tap "F2" as soon as the Dell image appears on the laptop's screen. Scroll to the "CD-ROM" option and press "Enter." Tap any key when you see the "Press any key to boot" option.
  • 3 Press "Enter" when the setup screen appears. Press "F8" and highlight the Dell's hard drive partition. Press "Enter."
  • 4 Follow the instructions on the screen to choose the Inspiron's operating system options. Click "Finish" and remove the recovery disk from the optical drive. Click "Start" and select "Restart."
Hope this helps!

The Dell 1357 laptop has Vista Home Premium and is as it was purchased. When booting, the computer beeps rapidly for about 30 seconds, displays an opportunity to boot into Vista, and then beeps for another...

If it is actually booting into Vista, it sounds like maybe you have a stuck key. Turn the computer off and press every key a few times and see if any of them feel "stuck". Even if they don't, pressing them may have released any sticking they had. I would try that first.

Keyboard malfunction

Sounds like some water or other liquid got into the keyboard or could be that some keys are sticking. With the laptop turned off. Run your fingers thru all the keys going from left to right, up to down. This will ensure that if any keys are sticking that they will become unstuck.

Turn on the laptop and if you still have the problem then the keyboard is bad and would need to be replaced.
